　モーツァルトがフルートが嫌いだったという話は有名だがこの音楽を聴けばその話を否定したくなるだろう。とにかく明日への希望に満ち溢れているような一枚だ。　
　演奏者であるニコレだが、15か16才の時モーツァルトのフルート協奏曲を演奏した際、その時の指揮者であったかの有名なフルトベングラーが感極まり涙を流しながら指揮をしたという逸話が残っているほどの孤高のフルーティストだ。もちろん、このCDでもニコレの内面的な音楽性、いや人間性が湧き出したとてもあたたかい演奏が聴ける。
　ニコレは2005年現在まだ世界各地で公開レッスンを開いて後世の指導にあたっている。まだまだがんばってもらいたい。

　モーツァルトのフルートカルテットは、この分野唯一の名曲。親しみやすいが、聴かせるのが難しい曲である。技巧は平易と言って良く、見せ場は少ない。音色とアンサンブルの良さ・楽しさや、アットホームな雰囲気が、アピールポイントであると思う。その点で、たいていの演奏が協奏曲風であったり、どぎつい表情過剰であったり、やさしいが故にテンポが速く華麗に過ぎたり、と及第点に達していない。それらの欠点を感じさせない古楽器の演奏もクイケンを始め多種存在するが、今度はどれも同じ雰囲気で（もちろんカデンツァやアーティキュレーションの違いはおもしろいのだが）、曲本来の持つ訴えかけの弱さがでてしまい、決定盤というには、躊躇してしまう（レザデューなど素晴らしいが・・）。現代楽器では、素朴な音色のレーデル盤が、テンポも最も遅い超名盤だが、一部フォルテで音が割れるモノラル盤である。
　このニコレ盤は、ニコレが尻上がりに好調である（この絶好調時の豊かな音色は、なぜかモイーズを彷彿とさせる！！芳醇な最高の音色であるし，それを捉えた録音も見事）とともに、誰も出しゃばらないアンサンブルからヴィオラなど内声部が大変良く聞こえ、その点も大変な聞き所で、発見の多い演奏となっている。録音も、デッドでなく、エコーが過剰でなく、まさに理想的な室内楽録音である。テンポも、いつものニコレより一回りも二回りも遅く、じっくりと腰を据えて、落ち着いたいい雰囲気の中、セッションを行った（お気に入りの日本での録音）ことが想像できる。pの美しさも群を抜いており、そこに音量の中心を置いているので、けっしてやかましくならない。繰り返し聴いて疲れないどころか、何度でも聴いていたい演奏なのである。1926年生まれのニコレは、若き日のリヒターらとの協演の頃（ベルリンフィルをやめた1957年頃から60年代半ば）が彼の絶頂期であると信じているが、バウムガルトナーとの管弦楽組曲第２番の新盤（1978）と並び、熟年となったニコレの、これは代表的名盤である。
