美しくも飾るところのない島、純粋な子供達、
温かく控えめで、でも強く映像に溶けこんだきれいなＢＧＭ。
主人公が話せないため、丁寧にその表情やしぐさを追うことになり、
自然と観ている側も映像の世界に入っていくことができます。
随所で、すがすがしさと、温かい気持ちと、少しの勇気をもらえる。
そんな素敵な映画です。

　瀬戸内海の離島・葉名島の小学校に、臨時教員が北海道から赴任してきた。その青年教師は吉岡誠吾(坂口憲二)、剣道の試合の事故で発語を失い口がきけなかった。子どもたちは、吉岡を図体がデカく口をきかん先生＝機関車先生と呼んだ。やがて、よそ者で口がきけないというハンディーキャップを背負いながらも、機関車先生の温厚で真摯な姿勢は子どもたちや島民に浸透していった。しかし、機関車先生は葉名島を離れることに……。

　障害を負った青年教師が子どもたちと島民のふれあいによって失意の淵から再起する。人をつくるのが人であるなら、教師をもまた人である以上、人すなわち、同僚の教師、生徒と親、島民よってつくられる。この点において、本作は教育と教師の復権を示唆する傑作である。子役の７人は新鮮で微笑ましい。また、堺正章、伊武雅刀、倍賞美津子、大塚寧々がそれぞれの登場人物の奥行きのある人間味を表現している。台詞の無い最難関の役どころを坂口憲二が好演し、表情や動作・しぐさで機関車先生の内面を裸出している。本編ラストにおいて、子どもたちと機関車先生が交わすたった一語の言葉は心の深奥にふれずにいられない。

機関車先生非常にいい男であった。
ここまで田舎を再現（？）できたのが凄い。
やんちゃ坊主のしゅうへいの演技が光っていた。演技と思えなかった位すごい。
ありきたりな話ではあるけれど、古き良き日本が描かれていて心和む作品です。

１箇所、坂口憲二の表情で忘れられないシーンがあります。

それにしてもなんで機関車なのかと思ったら・・非常に子供らしい発想で現実味があっていい。
ほろりときたところもありました。
あとなんかマチャアキが気になった。
