「レモン・トゥリー」、「花はどこへ行った」、「パフ」、「風に吹かれて」、「悲惨な戦争」他、当時発売されたＬＰで、聞くことの出来なかったピーター・ポール&マリーの全てがここに収められています。ディスクの1~4がCDで、ディスク5がDVDでお宝映像が収録されています。

日本のフォークは、ピーター・ポール&マリーのカバーからスタートした、と言っても過言ではないと思います。「パフ」なんかは、アマチュアのフォーク・ソンググループの定番曲だったと言えるでしょう。みんな、コピーしようと努力しましたが、このステキなハーモニーはなかなか産み出せなかったと思います。アメリカン・フォーク・ミュージックの最高峰ですよね。とても上質のハーモニーは、思い出と共に色あせないものになっています。

個人的には、「悲しみのジェット・プレーン」が大好きです。1969年に全米第１位になった曲です。リアルタイムに深夜放送で聴いていた曲なので、今でも気にいっています。もともとジョン・デンバーの曲ですが、PPMの歌声だからヒットしたと思います。

最愛の恋人と別れを惜しみながら、ジェット機に乗って飛び立っていくという歌です。1969年当時、ジェット機は軍用機しかなかったそうですね。当時の社会情勢をご存知の方はその時代背景が良くわかると思います。アメリカの多くの若者がベトナムに連れていかれました。
すなわち、ベトナム戦争真っ只中の「反戦歌」の意味合いが含まれていたこともあり、若者の支持を集めたのでしょうね。ちょうど日本では大学紛争激化の頃です。

男女3人のハーモニーとギターで奏でられるサウンドは、「フォーク」という一大音楽ジャンルに燦然と輝きを持って今も存在しています。エバーグリーンミュージックと言えましょう。
マリーさんは来年７０歳になります。いつまでもいつまでもお元気で活躍して欲しいですね。
