モデル出身の草刈正雄が沖田総司に扮し、青春もののニュアンスを投入した異色時代劇。監督は「俺たちの荒野」などの青春映画で注目されていた、当時新進の出目昌伸。結核のため、余命2年を医師に言い渡された沖田が、新撰組の仲間たちと共に、激動の時代を駆け抜ける。
物語の中心となるのは、沖田(草刈)、土方歳三(高橋幸治)、近藤勇(米倉斉加年)の3人。出目監督の演出は、70年代初頭に流行したアメリカン・ニューシネマのタッチを取り入れ、沖田と土方のふたりは、さしずめ「明日に向って撃て!」(ジョージ・ロイ・ヒル監督)のブッチとサンダンスといった趣。草刈が演じる沖田総司は、あまりにスマートすぎ、土着感に欠けるきらいはあるものの、西田敏行ら新撰組の面々とのバランスの妙がなかなか楽しめる。疾走する沖田の映像で幕を開ける本作は、エンディングも同様に走る沖田の姿で幕を閉じる。時代を駆け抜けた男の、短くも颯爽たる生き様は、爽やかな風のようだ。(斉藤守彦)
