私は忠臣蔵では「大映」と「東宝」の作品が好きですが、大映の作品は、まさに娯楽としての映画で、面白おかしく、艶やかにまとまっているのに対して、東宝の作品は討ち入りの場面までのストーリー展開を重視して、一本の物語における大きな柱を崩さないで進行していくような感じがいたします。
ともに、まさにオールスターキャストでどちらもまったく引けを取らない豪華なものです。
しかし、大石が敵の目を欺くために遊び呆けるシーン１つみても、大映は華やかで（大道具､小道具の裏方の充実ぶりはすごい）長い時間割いているのに対して、東宝は意外とあっさり。逆に、殿の殿中での「ご乱心？」までの過程は東宝の方が、まったく持ってわかりやすいほどの説得性を持っております。意外と加山雄三さんの「殿様ぶり」も似合っていると言う面もあるのですが。
このように、少しまじめな感じがしますが、「忠臣蔵」を観る分には、このくらいの時間は長くはないと思いますし、この作品は充分それだけの価値のある作品となっていると思います。そして観客も一緒に討ち入りのシーンに感情移入できるのは、こちらの作品だと思います。しかしこの２社の作品はともに優れている「役者」を見るには最適な、本当に豪華な配役陣の贅沢な映画と言えるでしょう。

宝田明、小泉博、佐藤允、夏木陽介、佐原健二、土屋嘉男、高島忠男…往年の東宝怪獣映画・戦争特撮映画で、おなじみの顔が赤穂浪士となって総登場し、伊福部マーチに乗って討ち入り。
その意味では実にファンタスティックな映画。
『無法松の一生』の稲垣浩監督作品であり、当然、時代劇として格調高いものになっています。
