   雑誌「科学と学習」で有名な学研から登場した、大人の好奇心を満たす手作り科学キット「大人の科学シリーズ」。本製品は1816年にスコットランドのロバート・スターリングが発明し、空気の膨張・収縮を利用したクリーンな外部燃焼エンジン「スターリングエンジン」の仕組みを用い、発電機・扇風機・車の3つの実験が楽しめるキット。

   実験にはアルコールランプと試験管を使用。3つのレバーのON/OFFの切り替えにより「車輪を動かし車を走らせる実験」「発電機のランプを点灯させる実験」「プロペラを回す実験」の3つを行うことが可能。キットの組み立ては約3時間で特別な道具は不要。自分で組み立て、動かすことで熱力学の基礎がわかるので、ひとりではもちろん、子供と一緒に学びながら実験を楽しむことができる。

   なお、実験に使用する燃料用アルコールは別途購入しなければならないので、すぐに実験をはじめたい人はあらかじめ薬局等で購入しておくといいだろう。（三井貴美子）

これは、完全な「大人の科学」ですね。子供に遊ばせておくものではありません。組み立ても、ちょっと細かいところがあって、でもそれほど難しくはありません。しかし、これは子供にはやらせたくありませんね。是非大人のあなたが組み立てて下さい。燃料の「燃料用アルコール（メタノールが主成分）」は別に購入しなくてはいけませんが、薬局で簡単に手に入ります。さぁ、いよいよアルコールランプに点火です。始動はちょっと人間の手を借りますが、一旦動き出したエンジンはなかなか力強いものです。かなりわくわくして嬉しくなります。秋の夜長に組み立てて、ちょっとした科学を味わってみてはいかがでしょうか？

むつかしいところは組みあがっているとはいえ、部品点数は多いです。
また、かなりきゃしゃな作りなので細心の注意が必要です。私は、車軸のねじこみ部分にゴミがはいっているのに気づかず、ムリにねじ込んでボルトを折ってしまいました。
物を作ることに喜びを感じる方には強くお勧めしますが、そうでないかたは、それなりの覚悟をもって取り組まれるべきでしょう。もっとも大人の科学の大作シリーズはほとんどそうですから、作ることがあまり好きでないかたは購入しないですよね？
車として走らせるにはピストンの調整がかなり正確でないといけません。
ピストンはスチールウールでできています。熱による磨耗が烈しく、耐久性があまりない点が気になりました。本物ではどういうものが使われているのでしょうか？

最新の潜水艦などに使用されている、スターリングエンジンが自作できると知って、矢も楯もたまらず購入してしまいました。
自他共に認める不器用人間で、小学生の頃はガンプラを完成させるのもおぼつかなかった私ですが、3-4時間ほどで特にトラブルなく完成できました。
組み上がったエンジンの動きは思いの外力強く、空気の収縮がこれほどに素早く力強く行われているとは正直驚きました。
アルコールランプの作りがやや雑なのと、タイヤ取り付けの軸がすこし歪んでいたのが気になりましたが、他に代え難い喜びを与えてくれたので文句なしの満点です。

なんかこういうの好きです。動画ファイル見てみましたが、「おお！動いてるよ。」なんていう感動を味わえそうです。ギミックもレトロな感じでとてもいいです。
