ジャケット、バンド名、メンバー(皆さん黒人)といったところから、てっきりファンク系バンドだと思ったのですが、いざ音を聴いてみると黒っぽさを交えたジャズ・ロック的スタイルだった点に驚きました。
バンドの背景やメンバーの経歴はおろか、どのような活動をしていたのかも全く知りませんが、少なくとも70's初期(本作は'70年のリリース)にあって、所謂ロックだ、ジャズだ、ソウルだ、R&Bだと言った垣根が(一時的にせよ)取り外されたかのような音楽の隆盛があった事を伝える一枚なのかなぁと思います。
オルガンとホーンが目一杯フィーチャーされ、ほぼノン・エフェクトに近いギターのカッティングが鳴るさまは、さしづめ、ブラス・ロックにも通じるところがあります。時にはフルートとコーラスを配しての楽曲[4]等は、オールド・ロック・ファン(?)にも十分訴求するものではないでしょうか?
また、そのタイトルが如実に示すようにアフリカン・テイストを洗練させた形で楽曲へ盛り込んでいる点も(彼らの専売ではないにせよ)特徴と言えるでしょう。[5]はその最たるものかと思います。付属の8インチCD(3曲入り)に収められた未発表曲もなかなかあなどれません。
単にマイナー/短命バンドを掘り起こして、それを"通(ツウ)"ぶって誉める訳ではなく、そこに含まれていた楽曲に対して純粋に"イイじゃないか"と思った次第です。
