グレイトフルデッドの数多いアルバムの中で、一番聞きやすく、
このバンドのサウンドに初めて触れる方には最適だと思います。
特にアメリカントラディショナルな要素が強く歌を前面に出して
いるのが特徴です。1曲目の「ＢＯＸ　ＯＦ　ＲＡＩＮ」は
ベーシストのフィル・レッシュの哀愁漂うリードボーカルが印象

的です。私自身はこのアルバムは数百回は聞いていますが、未だに
飽きることが無く新鮮な気持ちで聞けます。是非、このアルバムを
様々な音楽ファンの方々に聞いて貰いたいです。

　アメリカン・ロックを代表する名盤中の名盤のレビューがどうしてこんなに少ないのだ。この演奏の素晴らしさについては繰り返すまでもないと思っていたが、そうでもないようだ。
　第一曲、「ボックス・オブ・レイン」ジェリー・ガルシアの作曲ではない。この曲、ライブ演奏もあるけれど、このオリジナルとはまるで違ったアレンジになっている。それもそのはずで、このオリジナルの完成度は、同じアレンジで歌った場合、絶対に達成できないと思われるからだ。死にゆく父と、病床に見舞う子との、本当に切ない、美しすぎる対話。ロック史上のひとつの奇跡のような演奏である。
　他、デッドの代表曲「フレンド・オブ・ザ・デビル」、踊れる「シュガー・マグノリア」、身悶えするような、死ぬほど耽美的な「ブロークダウン・パレス」、サイケデリックな一面を見せる「ティル・ザ・モーニング・カム」・・・ここにはデッドの幅広い音楽性が集約されていると言える。また、駄曲がほとんどないのもこのアルバムの大きな特徴だ。残念ながら、個人的には「オペレイター」は必ず飛ばして聴くようにしている（笑）。ここまで魂込めたアルバムを作れるというのは、彼らにとっても最初で最後だったわけで、まさにこのとき彼らにはミューズが憑いていたのだろう。
　ロックというジャンルにとどまらず、すべての音楽を愛する方にとっての名盤だと思うのだが、どう思われるだろうか。

僕が彼らに興味を持ったのは「プレシディオの男達」って言うショーンコネリーの出ている大して面白くない映画だった。
その中のせりふに「グレイトフルデッドを知らないのか？世界で一番かっこいいバンドさ！」ってでてきた。
うーむ、これは聴かねばってことでベストを買ってきて早速聴いてみたんだが、感想は「なんじゃこれ…？」
「うーむ…。」って感じだった。
じゃがこのアルバム買って良さがわかった。
デッドはサイケなアシッドバンドとして有名だがこれはそんな感じではなく、アコースティックオンリーなレイドバックした名曲揃いのアルバムだ。
一言で言うと「心地いい」。
このアルバムは歴史に残る素晴らしいアルバムだと思う。
ニール・ヤングの「アフター・ザ・ゴールドラッシュ」とこの「アメリカン・ビューティー」が僕にとってのアコースティックベストなアルバム。
トリップするデッドもいいですし、このアコースティックなデッドもいい。
まずデッドに入るならこれからです。
