カナダ出身のベテラン・シンガー・ソングライター、レナード・コーエンの通算13作目となるオリジナル・アルバム。すべて自作曲で、最後に「テネシー・ワルツ」のライヴ音源をボーナス収録。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

コーエン翁、70歳になったばかりらしい。いつまでも、なまめかしいヴォーカルである。おくゆかしく濡れた声のソウルフルな女性コーラス陣(曲によってはリード・ヴォーカルもとる)にバックアップされてゴキゲンそうだ。心のおもむくままのリズムで穏やかにゆったりと発らせれる声が、たゆたいながらスウィング。やがてすべてを包容してゆく。敷居が高いイメージをもたれている人かなとも思うが、今回もコンピュータで作られた音が中心のせいか、誤解を恐れずに書くとポップな作りと言える。といっても、ぬくもりと慈しみにあふれた枯山水の味わいなのである。(1)は19世紀頭の英国ロマン派詩人のロード・バイロンの詩に曲を付けたものだし、曲ごとにドラマがあるからていねいに書かれたライナーを参照しながら聴くといい。最後の最後に入っている「テネシー・ワルツ」はバンド編成での85年のライヴ。これもまたCDのアンコール・プレイとして楽しめる。深々と癒す3年ぶりのアルバム。 (行川和彦) --- 2004年12月号

　あの声に、当然のようによりそう女性のボーカル。タイトル曲やいくつかの作品は詩にメロディーがないが（すなわち詩の朗読）、なんと艶やかなことか。 おそらく、あの 9.11 New York テロを歌ったと思われるOn that dayでのTheyとは誰？あるいは何？自作曲（ケベックのfolk songが原曲と記されているが）としてはこのアルバムの最終曲「the Faith」の圧倒的な美しさ。海原を漂うようなメロディーにのせて歌われる「人間」の全て。「まだ、疲れきってなんかいないだろ？」。優しさ、慈しみ、哀しみ、死、性ー愛、憎しみ、人間が越えられない崇高なる存在、そしてワルツ。さらにこれらの全てを包み込むほどのユーモア？このアルバムにはCohenの全てが凝縮されている。ジャケットに描かれた女性（Heather はこの女性の名前？）の絵（おそらく自作）は笑ってもいない、泣いてもいない、だがどこか（誰か？）に視線を向けている。その傍らにCohenの証としての朱印２つ。入り口からこのアルバムの全てが暗示されている。
　いかし、ただひとつ残念なこと。それは未だ彼のライブを体験できないことだ。何回か来日しているのにコンサートをしない。これからも叶わぬ夢なのか？でも私はいつまでも待つだろう。

７０歳になったコーエンの唄はもう終わっていた。あのスケベで女好きの頃の油ぎったコーエンが僕は好きだったと自覚した。それでも、ここまでのコーエンの数々の唄たちとの出会いには感謝せずにはいられない。
彼の詩集が日本でも発売されないのだろうか。彼のコンサートDVDが発売されないのだろうか？コーエンは日本ではマイナーなまま終わる存在のようだが、ヨーロッパでは厳然たる存在感があると聞いている。
