 『地獄の黙示録』製作の後、ノスタルジックな方向性へと転換していたフランシス・コッポラ監督が、そのピークとして製作した娯楽超大作。1920年代後半、禁酒法下のハーレムにあった伝説的ナイトクラブを舞台に、そこでのし上がろうとするディキシー（リチャード・ギア）ら若者たちや、一方では実在のギャングたちの覇権争いなどが赤裸々につづられていく。
   ビル・ロビンソンをモデルにしたとおぼしきタップダンサーを熱演するグレゴリー・ハインズのタップと、ギャングたちの銃撃戦をカットバックさせたクライマックスなど、『ゴッドファーザー』を彷彿させるショットも多数見られる。セピア色を基調とした映像も、当時の雰囲気を巧みに醸し出しており、またクラブ内の美術などスタッフワークにも怠りはない。（的田也寸志）

全編を通して音楽とステージが裏社会のダークな雰囲気をスリリングに引き立て、そこで必死に生きる人たちの望みや喜び、しぶとさなどがほほえましく、２組のカップルがどうなるのか期待を寄せながら
見ました。
見所はグレゴリー・ハインズのタップですね。裏社会の思惑が人知れず進む一方で、動と静が入り混じるハインズのタップがテンポよく進行していく場面は、裏社会のリズムをハインズが刻んでいるようで、謎めいた闇の世界をさらに濃密にしていきます。
デビューした頃のダイアン・レインが可愛く、すでに堂に入った演技をしており、ものをまっすぐ捕える彼女の目が暗黒社会で生きる女性の強さを表しているようで、映画にとてもはまっていました。

　ＬＤ盤が発売された当時は高くて手が出せなかったんだよな，これ。
定時制の学生だった自分には（確か）9,800円は出せなかった・・

　グレゴリーハインズのタップシーンは最高にカッコいい！
（カット割には少し問題あると思うんだけど・・）
ダイアン・レインが何か老けた感じするのが唯一の欠点かなぁ・・・

な〜んて、改めて見直すとアラも目に付くけど、普通に見るには
そんなこと全然気にならない。全編に渡って雰囲気が統一された
映像美を楽しむ映画ですな。

　値段も安くなって，いい時代になったよなぁとつくづく思う。

リチャード・ギア, ダイアン・レイン、グレゴリー・ハインズ、 ボブ・ホスキンス他。名優がそろっているこの映画　ＤＶＤがでているのです。なんとなく年末になると観たくなるこの映画。保存版です。どうぞお買いもとめください。
