最初の２曲だけが純粋なスタジオ録音、残りはライブ録音(夜を支配する人以外)という変則的な構成の本作。これは当時のクリムゾンのライブにおけるインプロの凄さを伝えるためだったと言われていますが、本当に見事な出来です。特に最後の２曲。表題曲はウェットンとブラッフォードの作り出すリズムが強烈です。特にブラッフォードはミューアの影響を受けてか様々な打楽器を使いこなしています。そして本作のハイライト「突破口」。フリップが様々なテクを駆使し、もはや人間業とは思えない演奏をしています。後半にかけて盛り上がるところは当時のクリムゾンのテンションの高さを物語っていて、恐るべき緊張感と共に突っ走ります。「フラクチャード」として焼き直しが行われるなど、フリップ自身もお気に入りの一曲としてあげています。「宮殿」、「太陽と戦慄」、「レッド」、「ディシプリン」といった代表作を聴き終わった後に(人によってはディシプリンよりも先に)お薦めします。

本作収録の人気曲「夜を支配する人々」の原題は"The Night Watch"です、

じっくり聞きこめば分かるように17世紀オランダの画家レンブラントの歴史的名画「夜警」に想を得た曲です、リチャード・パーマー・ジェームスの詩の意味するところは17世紀当時の世界的大国だったオランダと国の反映を支えたブルジョワ層の人々への讃歌と解釈できるでしょう、

最近復刻されている1960年代70年代のロックCDの一部では、発表当時おかしな日本語訳が当てられていたタイトルが再翻訳され、より理解しやすい日本語タイトルで表記される例も見られます、

"The Night Watch"に関しても「夜を支配する、、、」といったオカルトじみた題名から「夜警」と改題する程度の英断は今後、キング・クリムゾンのファンになる若い世代のためにもぜひ実行してほしいものです、すでに「21世紀の精神異常者」が「スキッツォイド・マン」と逆に意味不明な方向へ改題されたことはとても情けない印象を受けます、

作詞者ジェームスをはじめクリムゾン各メンバーも自身の曲が日本でどのような題名が付けられているのか知らないからこそなのだろうと想像しますが、

また、本作に関しレンブラント「夜警」との関連を指摘できない”評論家”と”擬似評論家”の書く文章は無視することをお奨めします、

ちなみに、"The Night Watch"はアムステルダム・コンセルトゲボウ劇場でのライブ録音、同劇場は世界的に有名なオーケストラを要する同国でも歴史ある場所です、レンブラントが活躍した国の代表的なクラシック用劇場で時を越えてロックバンドによってかつてのオランダの栄光を称える歌がライブ録音されたという一種の奇跡のような感動を味わえることこそが、本作を他に類を見ない作品にしている重要な要素です、
