1977年発表の『デケイド』以来となるベスト・アルバム。『華氏911』のサントラに収録され、同映画のエンドロールでも流れるナンバー「ロッキン・イン・ザ・フリー・ワールド」も収録。

スティーヴ・スティルスらとバッファロー・スプリングフィールドを結成の後、1968年に解散、翌年ソロ・デビュー。同じく1968年夏にCS＆Nに参加するも、1971年脱退。1972年の『ハーヴェスト』で人気を確立した後は、自らの信念に基づきさまざまな作品を発表し、90年代以降も意欲的に活動を続けるニール・ヤング。これまでのキャリアを総括する集大成的な1枚だ。

まずひとつ疑問が浮かぶ。なぜこんなに時間がかかったのだろう。ともかく、ヴァン・モリソンのような同時代のアーティストはシングルヒット曲を集めたベスト盤を売り出し、入門編もなしにいきなりそんなディープなカタログに飛びこむのをためらっていた消費者相手に大ヒットさせていた。そこで35年ものソロとしてのキャリアを持つニール・ヤングもついに、最も謙虚な形で休業前の“ヒット曲”を概観するアルバムを出した。驚くのは、これほど自尊心が高い一匹狼が慣例を尊重していることだ。もちろんオリジナルのマスター・ミックスはファンにとってはうれしいものだが、オリジナルの「Like a Hurricane」（邦題「ライク・ア・ハリケーン」）が入っている2枚のアルバムも数年を見渡す数枚のライヴ演奏の録音もすでに持っているだろう忠実なファンにとっては、これに大した価値はない。ヤングがトップ10入りしたのは1度だけ（1972年の「Heart of Gold」（邦題「孤独の旅路」））なので、このアルバムを構成するのは、チャートに入ったヒット曲というより「Cinnamon Girl」（邦題「シナモン・ガール」）、「Rockin’ in the Free World」（邦題「ロッキン・イン・ザ・フリー・ワールド」）、「Hey, Hey, My My」（邦題「ヘイ・ヘイ、マイ・マイ」）といったコンサートの定番となっている。いまだ現役のベテランというヤングの尊敬すべき立場にもかかわらず、このアルバムは初期の作品に偏りすぎていて、最近の力強い作品は少ない。少なくともこの2枚組ディスクに収められたビデオや写真、リリック、ウェブリンクは忠実なファンを楽しませてくれるだろう。（Steven Stolder, Amazon.com）

私がニールヤングと出会ったのは中学生の頃ラジオで聞いた「孤独の旅路」でした。青春の真っ只中にいた当時あの歌詞、サウンドには無性に惹かれすぐさま「ハーヴェスト」を買いました。以来ソロ作品はもとよりＣＳＮ＆Ｙも含め彼の音楽を聴きあさりました。さすがに最近は頻度こそ減ってきましたが・・・そんな中これはいい！！初期の作品が多いのは私らの年代にはグッとくるものがあります。思えば彼と一緒に随分長いこと過ごしてきたものだと思います。彼はいつまでたっても変わらない音楽を提供してくれます。これからもきっとそれは変わらない。そのことが無性に嬉しい今日この頃です。久しぶりに聞いた「ライク・ア・ハリケーン」の泣きのエレキ　初めて聞いた時と同じ様に鳥肌が立ちました。この気持ちを私はいつまでも持ち続けたいと考えています。

既に書き込まれている方も知っていただきたいのですが、ニール・ヤングはリプリーズ・レコードを離れるようで、最後の新作となるようです。あくまで、レコード会社主体の発売で、ニールがおまけのＤＶＤ製作で協力した形のリリースですね。選曲は平凡でやや強引なのが残念。

Rockin in the Free~ Worldをむりやりねじ込んだような
支離滅裂な選曲はこの際ともかくとして
この値段でアルバム全曲の高音質オーディオトラックと
歌詞や写真などのデータを収録したDVDをつけたことは
それなりに評価できるのではないかと思います。
少しでも良い音で聴きたい人、逆に全く聴いたことがない人、には
悪くない選択肢のひとつなのではないでしょうか。~
