ミシシッピ・デルタからサハラ砂漠までは、かなりの距離がある。だが、ブルースマンのジョン・リー・フッカーのようなうねるようなブルース・ラインと催眠術にかかるようなギターを、ティナリエンのメンバーは響かせる。伝統的なトゥアレグ族の楽器を20年前に捨ててエレキ・ギターを演奏することにしたメンバーだ。2000年の魅力的な『Radio Tisdas』に続くこの『Amassakoul』では、再びギャロップするようなリズムと砂漠のわななき、そしてもちろんエレキ・ギターをフィーチャー。４本のギターがうなり、ギザギザと鳴り、吠えて噛みあわさり、広大な砂漠のブルースのグルーヴにする。これがこのバンドの特徴だ。不気味な呼びかけと応答のヴォーカルはリスナーを引き込むと共に、夜、広々とした砂漠の空に燃えあがるキャンプファイアーのビジョンを呼び覚ます。このアルバムは元々考えられていたよりも、ティナリエンにはずっと柔軟性があることを明らかにしている。ブルースのリフはさらに多様になり、音楽はさらに複雑とアレンジ、より良いプロダクションで増音している。今回も印象的な作品『Amassakoul』を聴けば、バンドがアートの枠を磨き、その羽根を音楽的に伸ばして偉大な効果をあげていることがわかる。（Tad Hendrickson, Amazon.com）
