4.0 out of 5 stars ブレッカーを熱く鼓舞するドラミング, 2004/11/9
何を聴いても、不完全燃焼の感が拭えないウイントン・マルサリス。その唯一の例外が、エルヴィン・ジョーンズが参加した新宿ピットインでの「至上の愛」ライブだ。エルヴィンの強烈なプッシュで、マルサリスは別人のように燃えさかった。コルトレーン・カルテットのドラマー、エルヴィンの凄さを再確認したアルバムであった。

さて、本作の注目はマイケル・ブレッカーの参加。ブレッカーといえば、ドラマーはジャック・デジョネットと好相性だと思っている。このエルヴィンとの共演は、デジョネットとのような密度の濃い一体感には欠くが、ブレッカーもマルサリス同様、強力に鼓舞されているのが伝わってくる。スタンダードを朗々と吹き上げる３、コルトレーンライクに咆哮する５(「五木の子守歌」のメロディはご愛敬)。ともに力のこもった熱演となった。

マイケル・ブレッカーのソロはその２曲だけだが、ブレッカーファンにはぜひ一聴をお薦めする。この２曲だけなら５ツ星だが、あとの曲はいささか平凡。エルヴィン・ジョーンズのドラミング自体は、コルトレーン時代がやはりピークであったとの思いを深くした。

M.Breckerが出てるので買ってみた。が、Breckerもいいけど、やはりElvin!のドラムに耳が行ってしまう。もう年だからダメかな…なんていうのは全くの間違いです。素晴らしい！の一言。亡くなってしまったのがとても残念です。ちなみにBreckerの出番はあまりないです。音も以前とは変わった印象。でも五木の子守唄（だっけ？）ではぶち切れます!!Crazy!!自然に笑ってしまい、曲が終わったら部屋の中で思わず拍手してしまいました。

4.0 out of 5 stars エルビン晩年のバースデイライブ作！, 2005/7/31
昨年亡くなったジャズドラムの巨人エルビン・ジョーンズの1999年9月のNYブルーノートでのライブ録音盤。
ENJAから4枚リーダー作を発表してからリーダー作が途絶えていたのだが、最新作が追悼盤の意味もあるのか、こうして発表されたことをファンとして喜びたい。
最後はドラムを叩けないほど衰弱しきっていたそうだがそれでもステージに立つエルビンに、20年以上前に逝ったソニー・スティットと同じジャズミュージシャンとしての性を感じるのは私だけではあるまい。
このアルバムでは、まだまだ元気な頃のいつものエルビンのドラムが聴けるのでご安心を。
「E.J.`S BLUES」「TRUTH」「五木の子守唄」「THREE CARD MOLLY」などいつものジャズマシーンのレパートリーと「STRAIGHTNO CHASER」「WISE ONE」や「BODY AND SOUL」が収録されている。
ソロイストの中では、「BODY AND SOUL」と「五木の子守唄」の2曲にフューチャーされるマイケル・ブレッカーが断然光っていて、
他のメンバーとのソロイストとしての力量の差を感じる。
出来たら全曲参加していて欲しかったと望むのは私だけであるまい。
かといって他のメンバーのソロが聴けないと言うのではない。念のため。
