実は、佐藤隆というシンガー（或いは作曲家）の名前をつい最近まで知らなかった。最近流行りの８０’をメインとしたいわゆる「コンピレーションアルバム」に彼の代表曲「マイクラシック」がたまたま収録されていてその物悲しくも美しい旋律に見事に打ちのめされた。イントロのバイオリン、全般に包み込むようなシンセサウンドといい。。自分は８０’ＪＰＯＰを結構知っているつもりだったが、まだこんな素晴らしい旋律を持った歌手が居た事に驚きを隠せない。そして、この歌手のアルバムを聴けばこのような美旋律を伴った曲がまだ見つかるのではないか？という密かな望みが涌き出て、いざ実際に聴いてみたのだが、その期待に見事に応えてくれた。

後に知ったのだが同氏は、どうやら８０’初頭レコード大賞で作曲賞を勝ち取ったそうで、道理で群を抜くメロディーセンスを持ち得ているのだと納得した。敢えて例えるなら、来生たかお氏のようなメロディーメーカーとしての才能を十二分に発揮したアダルトな哀愁メロディー×稲垣潤一氏のような都会性も兼ね備えたような雰囲気を全般に感じる。美旋律に包み込むようなシンセサウンドが８０’の風を感じると同時に都会性をも生み出す。

とにかく、「マイクラシック」の美メロを聴くだけでも価値はあるかもしれない、或いは「映画時代」「１２番街のキャロル」のような美旋律の上に詩的に綴られていく歌詞は、まるで何処かのワンシーンを思い浮かべるようで「マイクラシック」と並ぶ名曲だろう。

最近は年を重ねると共に、大人の渋みを感じる哀愁ポップスにやたらと傾倒しつつあるが、そのような要求に応えてくれる盤でもある。

近年はほとんど提供曲の印税暮らしなんじゃないか？と勘ぐりたくなるほど、WEBサイト以外での表立った活動のない佐藤隆氏だが、何曲かは初CD化であったりC/W収録曲で入手困難だったりするものがここで聴けるのはなんとも嬉しい。お勧めは研ナオコへの提供曲の「名画座」のセルフカバー。全般的にウエットなヨーロピアンテイストのアーバンな作風だが、彼自身のルーツはビートルズ風味の１５）のようなナンバー。「八月のメモワール」が新録音のバージョンでないのでこの評価。
