   ハードディスクの内容をバックアップし、落雷によるクラッシュなど不測の事態に備えることの可能なユーティリティソフトがパワーアップして登場。本製品を使用すればハードディスク内やパーティションに存在するデータすべてを、簡単にバックアップすることが可能。

   Windowsを再起動することなくバックアップイメージを作成できる新機能「ホットイメージ機能」や、前回のバックアップから増加した部分だけを差分でバックアップすることで、時間と容量を節約することが可能になった。さらに自動バックアップ機能をスケジュールすることにより、定期的にバックアップイメージを最新の状態に保つことも可能に。

   また、Windows 9x/Me/NTの各システムのバックアップおよびデータ復元を行うために必要な『Norton Ghost 2003』も同梱されているので、1台で複数のOSを使用している場合も安心して使用できる。CD-R/RWはもちろんDVD+R/-R、USB、IEEE 1394など、ほとんどのハードディスクやリムーバブルメディアに対応しているのもうれしい。（三井貴美子）

前バージョンと比較して、PowerQuest V2i Protector 2.0 Desktop Edition のファイルを読み込むことが出来るようになったこと位でしょうか。それ以外の変化はほとんどありません。
バックアップソフトというのは不測の事態に備えてのものなんですが、シマンテック製品のマニュアルはかなり読みづらく。このソフトも例外ではありません。不測の事態という間違いの許されない事態に陥ったとき必要なものなんですから、マニュアルおよびメニューは初心者でもわかりやすいようにして欲しいものです。機能的には優秀なんですから。。。
他のＳ社のソフトについても言えますが、このわかりにくさは伝統としか言いようがありません。中級者以上向けです。

従来のGhostはDOSベースであったので制約があったが、同様のシステムバックアップソフトの中では、基本機能を押さえコンパクトにまとまった秀逸なソフトであったと思う。さてニューバージョンではその制約をなくしてより使い易いものを目指したと思われる。差分バックアップやスケジュールといった付加機能はデータバックアップには便利だが、システムバックアップの本質は調子の良かった時のシステムをバックアップしておき、緊急時に復元するというものである。従って、この機能が如何に充実したかが問題である。その観点で評価すると、DOSに代わるシステムリカバリーがネットワーク対応となり、各種リムーバブルドライブ対応となった点は期待させるが、実際に使ってみると何故かwindows上で問題なく認識するネットワークドライブを認識できなかったり、システムがフリーズしたり、果てはこのソフトをインストールしたwindowsが起動できなくなったりと問題が噴出したのは残念である。
　こうした点から判断して、このソフトが従来のGhostから移行する価値があるとは現時点では言えない。

　私はデータのバックアップなんかに使いません。目玉は「マルチキャストによる一括転送」です。つまり，サーバに新規のOSイメージを入れておき，クライアントに一括転送。あとでライセンスキーを各クライアント用に書き換えるだけで，たった5分くらいで何十台も同時にOSのインストールが出来ます。
　基本的にLANとFDDがあればOSが簡単にインストールできます。CDROMドライブの無いノートPCへOSをインストールする際にも威力を発揮するでしょう。
　もちろんこのソフトはサーバソフトなので，WindowsのEULAに従って使用する必要があります。つまり，Windows2000Proなどでは場合によっては同時接続数を超えますので，Ghost自体は動作はしますがライセンス違反です。W2kServerなどをサーバにして使います。
　こんなに労力を軽減できるソフトが，たった数千円で買えるのですから(OSは5万以上するけど・・・）へヴィな自作ユーザからSOHOにはお勧めです。
