もう20年ほど前になる。関係者からスノーマンのLD試作版をもらった。この作品は絵も音楽もボーイ・ソプラノの歌も一体に融合して素晴らしい作品である。まだ、世間ではスノーマン・ブームが始まる以前である。大人、女子学生の反応は予想通りであった。驚いたのは、我が子供を含んだ3〜4歳幼児群であった。みんなジッとしていないが、ちゃんと観ている。絵と歌声で彼らなりの理解があるのだ。驚いたのは、サンタクロースが出てきて、スノーマンたちによるパーティーの踊りが始まったときである。4，5人の幼児はスノーマンの踊りに合わせて一斉に立ち上がり、笑顔で各自の踊りを始めたのである。彼らはスノーマンが凄く気に入ったのである。彼らは全身で共鳴共感したのだと想います。蛇足ですがRaymond Briggs原作の「The Snowman」（1978年）はほぼ完全に文がない作品で、1982年Dianne Jackson監督のもとで26分間のアニメとして制作されてアカデミー賞にノミネートされたものです。素晴らしい作品です。

　はじめて見たのは小学生の頃。池袋の某百貨店のおもちゃ売り場で。ちょうどクリスマスシーズンともあって、このVTRが何度も何度も流されていた。私は、あの名曲と映像に引き込まれテープが終わるまで、その場を離れられなかったことを覚えている。
　３０分ほどの短いアニメーションなのだが、まる一昼夜のドラマが凝縮されており、内容の濃い作品となっている。スノーマンと少年が、オートバイに乗り、夜の森を駆け抜けたり、夜空を飛行したり、またクジラが水面に躍り出たりと、迫力のある映像シーンが次々と繰り出される。今となっては、少しくどいような気がしないでもないが、それ故主人公の体感が鑑賞者にも強く伝わってくる。また、短いカットシーンなのだが、少年が何回もねがいりを打つ様子で、時間の経過を表現しているのはとても素晴らしい演出だと思った。
　日本のアニメーションが、しばしば世界で高い評価を受けている。この作品は英国だと思うが負けず劣らず、日本にはない映像美でもって、鑑賞者の心を掴んで離さない素晴らしい作品となっている。

5才の息子がさきの積雪で初めて雪だるまを作って、それが溶けていくのを経験したので、スノーマンを本とあわせて買ってやりました。あんなによろこぶ、というか、心から感動していました。DVDの進行にあわせて本を読まされました。鼻をつけかえて遊ぶところをあんなに面白がっておなかの底から笑える、子供っていいなあ、と思いました。
