CYNICの音はよくテクニカルデスとか形容されているので誤解している人も多いと思いますが、（自分も実際聞くまでそう思っていた...）
少なくともデスメタル的な邪悪・凶悪さとはかけ離れた奇才的プログレ系の世界の音です。
鋭利なメタルリフやデス声が基本とはいえ、エフェクトで歪みまくったノーマルヴォイスや女声コーラス等も使用しており、
普通のデスメタルでは出せない独特の無機質な浮遊感が漂っています。そしてこの張り詰めた空気の破壊力が凄まじいのです。
自分は古代エジプトの様な神々しい神秘的なイメージが湧きましたが、凄く独特の音楽世界なので浮かぶ像も人それぞれだと思います。
とにかく歴史の残る特異な存在である事に間違いはありません。


このリマスター盤はスリップケース＆新ジャケットにヴォーカルのポールのライナー等を追加したなかなか豪華な仕様。
ボーナスの12-14は後のユニットPortalのデモで、癒し系の音楽です。

聴く度にCYNICの凄さを確認します。CYNICを聴いた後にDEATHやMARTYRを聴きましたが、個人的にはやはりCYNICの方がイキキッテル感じがして最高です。DREAM THEATERも大好きですが…CYNICにはよりいっそうの神秘性を感じます。リミックス盤は音質が向上しててさらに凄さを感じることができます。

当時、デビュー前から騒がれやっと発売されたのがこのアルバム。
どんなサウンドが全く情報がなく、とにかくすごいデスメタルだと勝手に期待していたのだが、出てきたのはプログレというよりフュージョンをメタルにミックスしたもの。ちっともデスメタルではなくブラストもありません。これの印象が悪くて後のメシューガを食わず嫌いしていたことを思い出す。ちなみにスラッシュではコロナーは好きだがウォッチタワーは嫌いだった。僕の好みではシニックはウォッチタワー的だった。要するにアグレッシブさが全く存在していないのである。
結局これ１枚のみで解散したみたいだけど、ボーナスを加えてここに再発。しかし、2004MIXってナンだ？こういうのは反則だと思う。
