　ジャクリーヌ・デュ・プレは28才のとき多発性硬化症という不治の病に倒れ、42才の若さで亡くなった。いまや指揮者としてのほうが有名になったダニエル・バレンボイムが当時の夫だった。彼はデュ・プレが病気になる前から浮気をしてもうひとつ家庭を持っていたが、それなりに献身的な介護を続けた、という話をこのアルバムを聞くまで知らなかった。映画にもなったので、その辺の事情は周知のこととなったが、このエルガーの協奏曲の演奏は、二人の仲の良かった頃の青春の輝きに満ちた、実に溌剌としている演奏である。が、エルガーの曲の持つ情念の炎もともっていて、その後の二人のことをどうしても思って聞いてしまう名演である。
　こういうものはおもしろいもので、演奏者の事情を知らなければそれまでなのだが、知ってから聞くと実に味わい深く聞こえてくるから不思議である。ライブ盤で、音質が今の技術から考えると今ひとつの感はぬぐえないが、臨場感と演奏者の息遣い、(弓使い?)が感じられてすばらしいです。必聴！

デュ・プレのチェロが必要以上に重苦しい。
バレンボイムの指揮も、いまひとつ平凡。
