１９８１年のゴールドベルグ変奏曲が心に染み渡る水であればこの１９５５年のモノラル録音の方は吹き抜けていく風のようです、１９８１年は音の一つ一つに重みがあり「一言一言ちゃんと伝えたい」という感じ、それに対し１９５５年は「たくさん伝えたいことがあって自分の想いを一気に告げる」ような感じです。１９８１年は聞き終わった後に深い感動がありましたがこちらはある種の爽快感があるように思えました。どちらが好きかといわれたら１９８１年の方ですが単純に比較すべきではないのかもしれないです、それくらい同じ人が同じ曲を演奏しているのに雰囲気が、音が、伝わってくる感じが違います。

私はグールドのゴルトベルク変奏曲(新録音)をはじめて耳にしたときかってない衝撃を受けた。そしてこの旧録はさらに上をいっていた。彼の強烈なキャラクターもさることながら、音楽もまた彼独自のスタイルがそのままピアノに反映され聴き手の心を引きつけてやまない魅力を醸し出している。「この旧録に出会った事は幸運だった。」そう言えるのは私だけではないと思っている。

このデビュー盤は、内容は言うまでもないが、そのジャケットが味わい深い。スタジオでの録音の際にDon Hunsteinによって撮影された３０枚のグールドの写真。この曲に収められている変奏曲の数も３０であるところが象徴的である。プロデューサーのHoward Scottと議論している写真。歌いながら演奏する写真。２３歳の若者がこれほどまでに輝いている様子を羨望の眼差しで眺めないではいられない。
