マクロス20周年を記念し、河森正治監督が新構想で贈るOVA第5弾。1999年、地球に落下した異性人の戦艦を巡り、地球統合戦争が勃発。あれから8年。戦いで傷ついたサラの前に、“鳥の人”が出現し、サラ自身を包み込んでいく。第5章「鳥の人」を収録。

1982年10月より毎日放送系にて放送された「超時空要塞マクロス」の20周年を記念したOVA作品。原案・監督・メカデザインを務める河森正治を筆頭にTV版マクロスのオリジナルスタッフが結集。

「愛」と「歌」そしてドッグファイト、マクロスの要素は全て備えているはずなのに、なぜかしっくりこない。
「鳥の人」や「反統合軍」等、取ってつけたような設定は、どっかであったような台詞、どっかで見たようなシーン等、作品全体にたちこめているような気がした。
極めつけはラストシーン、果たして一巻から五巻まで見て納得できる人がいたのかどうか・・・

戦闘シーンは作画・演出ともに秀逸。戦闘機・ロボットの戦闘描写としては近年稀に見る出来栄えで素晴らしい。

反面、ストーリは破綻してしまった。壮大にしようと風呂敷を広げただけで終った。これでは内容が良い悪い以前の問題、構成の段階で失敗している。

戦闘描写が巧みだったのだから、プロトカルチャー云々は省いて物語の要素を「統合戦争」と「兵士」と「歌」に絞込み、たとえ泥臭くなっても、志向性を保った密度の濃い話にすべきだった。

中途半端な作品だが、ヴァルキリーの描写はシリーズ随一なので、マクロス２よりは評価したい。

　私はマクロスを見た事が無く、初めて見た作品がこれだったのだけど、確かに最終回の戦闘シーンは圧巻。
　でも、全体的に消化不良。プロトカルチャーとかの説明がしっくり来ない。
　新規の視聴者に対して、不親切。あの終わり方もムチャクチャ。
何が伝えたいのか、良くわからない。
　それなら、最初の方から、もっと戦闘シーンを見せてくれた方が良かった。物語自体、解り辛い。
　もっと予算を出して、あと２巻程度長くした方が良かったのではないか。
