ビリー・ジョエル、ブルース・ホーンスビー、ベン・フォールズ・ファイブ・・・ピアノというこの世で最も美しい楽器を売りにするアーティストは数多い。が、そのだれもがきっと憧れ、手本にしたであろう、それがエルトン・ジョン！！そんな彼の長いキャリアの中でも１枚選ぶとなれば、やはりこれかな？何といっても名曲揃い。心が洗われます。

　もう好きなんだか嫌いなんだかわからなくなるくらい聴きこんで、やっぱり絶対手放せない、私にとって「幼なじみ」ともいうべきアルバムです。タイトル曲「グッバイ…」は私の30余年のポップミュージックフリーク史上、最高の１曲です。最近時々TVCMでも耳にしますが、そんなに気安くあつかわんでくれ、と逆に腹立たしく思うほどです。そしてなんか恥ずかしいのです。まるで片想いの女の子とふいに顔を合わせたときのように。
　最近は「ロイ・ロジャース」がいいです。三拍子のカントリー風味のバラードが気持ちいい。またストーンズの大ファン(私もですが)であるエルトンがいかにも意識してつくった「ダーティ・リトル・ガール」も存在感あります。「キャンドル・イン・ザ・ウインド」や「ベニーとジェッツ」のような有名曲だけでなく、全17曲のすみずみまで気持ちの行き届いた名作です。
　ポップスファンになりたての頃にこんなアルバム聴いてしまったもんで、その後他のアーチストのアルバムはどうも物足りなくて苦労(?)しました。ま、大人になるといろいろな味わいができるようになりましたが。ともかくポップス&ロック史上に華麗に残る名作です。
