バンドやライブといった制約にとらわれることなく思いのままのセッションミュージシャンを使って最強のレコーディングユニットとなった巣ティーリーダン。本作は77年発売だが、75年頃からひたすらレコーディングミュージックを追求した作品。

拍子抜けするほど淡々と始まる1曲目。ミドルというよりスロー気味に展開する2曲目、3曲目と曲作りに感じる余裕が聴くものにいい形で伝わってくる。音楽的には意外なほど楽器の数は控えられているのだが、少ない音のひとつひとつが生きていて、疎と見せて緻密な音楽に仕上がっていると言えよう。#2に見る東洋的志向をほのかに感じるというのは考えすぎだろうか。また、コーラスの名手M.マクドナルドの参加もこの作品の味わいを一層深くする。緻密な分、D.フェイガンのボーカルの暴れがなりを潜めたのはさびしいが、それならばそれで次作Gauchoと、名作二枚を合わせて聴くことをお奨めする。

メンバーの脱退等によって、Donald FagenとWalter Beckerの2人となったSteely Danではあるが、実際Steely Danの歴史上、この2人のコンビによる時期こそ、黄金時代と呼んでも過言ではないだろう。そして、この"Aja"というアルバムこそ、彼らを代表する名盤として知られている。この70年代後半という時期は、白人の音楽と黒人の音楽がクロスオーヴァーという形で融合される事が風潮としてあり、このSteely Danも例に漏れず、ホワイトによるユニットでありながら、ソウルフルなグルーヴが前面に押し出された洗練された音楽が特徴だ。

彼等を指し示すのに相応しい言葉は正に「完璧主義」なのだろうと思う。様々なゲストプレイヤーとスタジオで緻密な音を積み上げるその姿勢は、正に職人と言えるべきもので、常に音源の完成度と評価は高い事で知られている。この"Aja"もLarry Carlton、Joe Sample、Chuck Rainey、Steve Gaddと言った誰もが知る名プレイヤーが制作に参加している。ここに収録されている楽曲を聴いていて思うのだが、1音たりとも無駄というものが感じられない。必要最小限の音だけを使用し、まるで空間さえもアンサンブルの一つとして捉え、そして名プレイヤー達の楽器がせめぎ合うように交錯していく。そうして生み出された音源の心地良さは、感嘆を洩らしてしまうほどだ。

最後に、このアルバムの印象的なジャケットも注目せざるを得ない部分だと思う。日本の生んだ国際派モデル、山口小夜子の艶やかなその存在感は、正に"Aja（彩）"という言葉を示すのに相応しいものだと思う。このジャケットがより一層"Aja"というアルバムのコンセプトを、誰の目にも明確なビジュアルとして表現し、この素晴らしい音源の数々を引き締める役割を担っていたように思う。これだけの表現を1枚の写真のみで表現出来る彼女自身もまた、「完璧主義者」なのだと思う。名盤と呼ばれる作品は、更なる完成度を求め、必然的に多くの芸術を引き寄せる力があるように思う。これだけの贅沢な気分にさせられる作品はあまり無い。
