Macintosh上にWindows環境を実現するエミュレータ。ドライブイメージファイルと設定を使用して、Macintosh上に仮想のPC環境を提供し、WindowsOSやWindows専用ソフトをMacintosh上で使用可能にする。また、両環境からアクセス可能なフォルダやディスクを作成でき、コピー&ペースト、ドラッグ&ドロップすることで、データやファイルの交換が行えるほか、CDのisoイメージやFDイメージをマウントすることが可能。さらに、MacOS Xでは、Dockから直接Windowsアプリケーションを起動したり、デスクトップドライブマウントにより、PC環境にあるファイルをバックアップすることが可能なほか、外部PCから共有フォルダにアクセスしたり、ホスト/ゲストOS間でネットワークテストが可能なバーチャルスイッチ機能を搭載。今バージョンでは、新たにPowerPC G5搭載Macintoshをサポート。また、カスタマイズの自由度が向上したほか、MacOS X向けに最適化されたことで、グラフィックの処理が向上した。さらに、インストール、印刷が簡単に。ほか、1回の操作で簡単に状態を保存できるファーストセーブ機能や、ヘルプ機能を用意。Virtual PC専用のWindows XP Professionalを同梱。通常版。

PowerBook G4 1.5GHzで使用しています。
さすがにWindows XPが快適に動作するとは言い難いですが、予想よりは普通に動きます。
Virtual PCの主な使用目的はHPのレイアウト確認なんで、それほど不満は感じません。
ちなみに、XP以外にもWindows2000と98SEを入れていますが、こちらは低スペックのPC並に動きます。
2000と98であれば実用に耐えうると思います。

G4Dual800mhz/2Gメモリにインストゥールしてみた。メモリは512MB割り当て。
インストゥールは極めてスムーズだが、Macのアプリケーション・フォルダの中に一時ファイルを相当入れ込むため、別のハードディスクの方にWindows環境を入れる場合でも、アプリケーションのあるハードディスク上に10G以上の空きディスクスペースがあったほうが間違いないようだ。
僕の場合速さはさほどイーミュレーションでもあり求めていなかったのだが、充分に速くXPでなんらストレスを感じない。共有フォルダを利用してWindowsにしかないソフトウエアを使い、仕事がより迅速になった。たとえばAccessでExcelデータやCSVデータのクエリーを作成し、結果の部分だけExcelに書きだししてMac環境に持ち込むとか、エンカルタ2005を使ってのデータを書きだしてMac側で使用するなど、Windows側の結果の産物だけ利用出来るという素晴らしい点が上げられる。
このソフトはご存知のように有名なコネクテイックス社が開発したものをマイクロソフトが買い上げたものだ。このバージョン7でより磨きがかかったと言えるだろう。Macでの仕事の幅が広がる傑作ソフトだ。

PowerBookG4 1.33GHz、OS10.3.6で使用していますが、VirtualPC 6.1に比べればかなりましになったと思います。
G4の1GHz以下のマシンの人は、Windows2000版を買った方が無難でしょうね。
