風通しが良く、ローファイでオルタナティヴ……。90年代の米国インディ・ロックの重要バンドの名セカンド作(94年発表)の特別編集盤。オリジナル収録曲に加え、当時のさまざまなマテリアルを追加。けっこう分厚いブックレット付きで、訳もきっちり付いている。

ローファイ・ブームの中、日本でも紹介され、この2作目で“音楽”的に正当な評価を獲得したペイヴメント。今作は、そんな『クルーキッド・レイン』発売10周年を記念した特別盤。アウト・テイクやBBCの『ピール・セッション』出演時の音源などを加えた全49曲2枚組となっている。未発表テイクは、マニア向けといった感もあるが、無邪気な実験性と、崩壊2歩手前の下手ウマさの微妙な関係性がより分かって面白い。そして、キラキラとしたメロディの良さ。これが決め手だったとあらためて実感。 (兒玉常利) --- 2004年12月号

ローファイ・サウンドの神として
インディーズ・シーンでカルト的な人気を誇った
ペイヴメントの名作2nd（94年作）
『Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain』10周年記念盤。
もちろんリマスター。

オリジナル・アルバム+お蔵入りレア・トラック+
レア・ライブ音源+ギャリー・ヤング在籍時音源の2枚組。

スティーヴン・マルクマスのよれたヴォーカル、
スコット・カンバーグの歪んだノイズ・ギターを
中心とする独特のローファイ・サウンドは
不思議な空気感を持ち、中毒性のある魅力がある。

グランジ以降の“脱力ロック”を代表する
彼らのヘロヘロな演奏には
ヴェルヴェッツ以来のニューヨーク・ロックの流れや
ジャズ・現代音楽の要素が融け、
ロックの醍醐味が詰まっている。

「クルーキッド・レイン」は、
他のバンドへの批判や「ロック」への決別を歌い
各方面で賛否両論の嵐を巻き起こした大問題作。
商業性に毒されたバンドや業界への憤り、
と同時にロックへの強烈な愛情を感じる。

彼らにとっては、
たかがロック、されどロックなのだろう。
表現手段としてのロックを
彼らは間違いなく、愛している。

まだ彼らに触れたことがなければ、
今作は格好の入門編になると思う。

Pavement史上の最高傑作と言われる事が多い、90年代を代表する一枚。
ローファイではあるのだが、知的センスが存分に散りばめられた作品である。

1994年といえばUKではOasisがDefinitely Maybeを、Primal ScreamがGive Out But Don't Give Upを、The Stone RosesがSecond Comingを発売した年だ。
かたやUSでは、Green DayのDookie、The OffspringがSmashがHITしパンクブームが起きてはいたが、裏ではWeezerがブルーアルバムを、BeckがMellow Goldを発売したりと、ジャンルの裾野を越える現象、まさしくオルタナが真っ盛りとなっていた。

そんな流れから考えた場合にPavementの「Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain」の存在感はいかに凄まじいか容易に想像が付くことだろう。

「Unfair」をはじめて聴いた時には脳味噌が溶けそうになったし、Smashing PumpkinsとStone Temple Pilotsをこき下ろした「Range Life」は痛快だった。
そして「ロックンロール時代にお休みのあいさつを」と歌うラスト曲「Fillmore Jive」も最高。

ずっと聴き続ける一枚だと思う。

　あのJonny Greenwoodもマイ・フェイバリットとして挙げていた94年発表のオルタナロックの一つの金字塔、Crooked Rain Crooked Rainがこの度発売10周年という事でリマスター、大量のボーナストラックを伴って再発される。当世ロック批評的な強烈な歌詞が物議を醸した作品なので、（多分）歌詞和訳付きの日本盤の発売はヒアリング出来ない自分としては嬉しい限りです。まあどうせ歌詞読んでも大半は意味分かんないんだろうけど。

　しかしこのリマスター、何作目まで続くんですかね。私はPavementどのアルバムも好きなんで、出来れば最後まで続けて欲しいんですが。しかしとなるとこの調子じゃ5thのリマスターが出るのは2009年!?　ひょえ~…。
