キンクス２枚目のコンセプトアルバム。内容、楽曲ともに本当にすばらしいまさにコンセプトアルバムの理想的な形です。
ストーリーは一人の英国人の人生を使って英国の近代史を歌っています、歌詞カードを読みながら聴くとほんとうに感動できます（実際私は泣いててしまいました）非常に人間的で普遍的な感情を歌っている事がこのキンクスのアルバムを時代を越えて聴かれるものにしているのです。
音楽的には前作（ﾌﾟﾘｻﾞｳﾞｪｲｼｮﾝ〜）よりロック寄りになっていますがキャッチーさは若干減っているかも知れません。聞き込みましょう

5.0 out of 5 stars ６０年代トータルアルバムの秀作, 2005/6/25
当時はザ･フーの「トミー」から数ヶ月遅れて発売されたため、「トミー」の物真似扱いをされたこともあった悲劇のアルバム。でも、それはあくまでもロック･オペラという手法的な話であって、「トミー」と聞き比べての良し悪しの評価はあまり意味のないことだと思います。
内容的には前作と比べて、ロック調になった弾んだサウンドになっており、レイの詩は、英国の社会体制とか家族のつながりみたいなものを対象にした、相変わらず皮肉ったものになっています。個人的には、ロックしてかつ皮肉じみた詩になっているキンクスが好きなので、全体を通して楽しく聴けた作品でした。（特に、７の「シャングリ・ラ」は良かった。）
また、ボーナストラックでは、１４の「キング・コング」１６「母の腕の中に」なんかがお薦めです。特に１６はキンクスっぽくないかっこいいナンバーになっており、デイヴのナンバーではこれが一番大好きです。

日本ではなぜか亜流扱いのキンクスですが、キンクス未体験の人には本作を挟む前後各１作（計３作）をぜひ聴いてみて欲しい。まさに、ワン・アンド・オンリーのバンドです。最高！
