以前取材した際「ウータン・クランが好き」と聞いてもいたので、今回のヒップホップ路線にも唐突さはない。レ・ヌビアンら併走する“アフロピアン”の成功を十二分にふまえつつ、ポリフォニーのポイント使用ではさすがの貫禄を出す。近年一番の成功作。(真)。

ザイール(現コンゴ民主共和国)×ベルギー、ダブル・ブラッドのマリー・ドルヌ率いるヴォーカル・グループ、であったザップ・ママは、97年の前前作『7』からマリーのひとりプロジェクトになっている。2000年にはベルギーからニューヨークへ移住し、ザ・ルーツをはじめフィラデルフィアを中心とするネオ・ソウル系のアーティストたちと共演交流を重ねてきた。本作でも(6)でザ・ルーツ(クエストラヴ)、(4)でエリカ・バドゥ、(5)でコモンといった面々が参加しているが、マリー自身のヴォーカルも基本的にはエリカ・バドゥ・マナーだ。全編で聴かれる涼やかなコーラスはコンゴのピグミー族の音楽を連想させるアフリカ的意匠だが、それも前面に立ったものではない。歌詞は大半英語、若干仏語。ここまでアメリカン・ブラックな音にもかかわらず、私は生粋のアフリカ人ときっぱり宣言する(1曲目)。単なる手法としてのミクスチャーではない、“音楽の未来によみがえるもの”を聴けということだろう。 (大須賀猛) --- 2004年11月号
