１９７３年頃に宇宙からの使者といったイメージで登場したロックンローラーとでもいいましょうか。２曲目は日本で小ヒットしました。３ｒｄあたりまでのクイーンなどがお好きならお勧めです。このアルバムはこの人が出した２枚のアルバムからの選曲のようです。できるなら２枚とも出して欲しかったな。アメリカのサイトではゲイロック？なんて紹介されてる模様・・・

マネージメントがゲイ・シンガーを拾って「宇宙から来た謎のジョブライアス」というアホな設定で、しかも大々的に金をかけて仕掛けるという、キワモノも極まれリな登場をしたジョブライアス。1973年と74年に2枚のアルバムをリリースしたが、当時は、ゲテモノというイメージが先行してかまるで売れなかった。しかし、内容は実はゲテモノどころではなく紛れもないホンモノ。

商業的に期待外れだったデビューキャンペーンのあと、グラムロックの退潮を見たマネージメントがあっさりと手を引いたため、その後は録音もなく、名前を変えてしばらくローカルな活動をしていたが、1983年にAidsで亡くなった。音源もこれまでずっと廃盤のままでCD化もされず、すっかり伝説的な存在になっていた。

当時、日本では加藤和彦が気に入って、チェンバロをフィーチャーした画期的なサウンドの「i'maman」などを自分のラジオ番組でオンエアしていたが、後には、スージー・スー、モリッシー、ポップグループのマーク・スチュワート、ペットショップボーイズのニール・テナント、ゲーリー・ニューマンなど、80年代のブリティッシュ・ポップの錚々たる顔ぶれがこぞってリスペクトしていたらしい。言われて見ればDuffoなどジョブライアスの影響が強かったのかもしれない。モリッシーに至っては自分のライヴに参加して欲しくて、亡くなった事も知らずに一生懸命探していたとか。これはそのモリッシーが、2枚のオリジナルアルバムから15曲を選んだ2004年の編集盤。

サウンド・プロダクションは、LAのスタジオ・ミュージシャンを集めているだけに、当時のライバル？だったデヴィッド・ボウイーやロキシー・ミュージック以上にプロフェッショナルな仕上がり。しかも、単に「手堅い」だけではなく、ピアノやチェンバロの使い方など相当に大胆で先鋭的。曲もちょっと地味で一般受けしにくいのかもしれないが、詩もいいし、歌もしっかりしていて、玄人受けするだけの要素はたっぷりとある。

ただ、この編集盤の2004年リミックスでは、狂気を孕んだようなオリジナル盤の暴力的なサウンドがやや大人しくまとめられてしまっているようで、少し物足りなさも残る。2007年には、オリジナル盤2枚もCD化されたので、特に1stの曲はミックスの違いをチェックしてみるといいかもしれない。
