例えば、1970年代の王道ロックしか普段聞かないよ、という人に対して、ボビー・ウォマックはソウル世界への入口にするには、格好の存在だろう。ガナリを多用するヴォーカル・スタイルやサウンド・プロダクトにロックっぽい部分も感じられる。しかし、それはあくまで彼の手の内のひとつであり、彼はさまざまなアプローチを自らの作品において展開しつつ、それでもその根底にはディープなソウルが必ずしっかりと息づいている。のめり込んでいくには実に適した存在だ。

その彼の1974年の７作目のＬＰと、1976年の10作目のＬＰのカップリング盤。まずは“Looking For A Love Again”、マッスル・ショールズでの制作、この頃の彼の作品は高値安定でハズレはないが、特にこの作品は、ヴァレンティノズの曲の再録“Looking For A Love”を筆頭に、実に素晴らしい曲が並んだ、代表作といっていいだろう。流麗なストリングスとバネの効いたリズムに彩られ、歌の味わいは、ロックっぽくもありながら、どこまでもディープ。

もう一方の“B.W. Goes C.W.”、カントリー・サウンドの全面展開、本人としても最も印象に残っている作品らしいが、当時のファンやレコード・レーベルとしては最も困った作品だろう。しかし、サム・クックの曲をカントリーにアレンジするなど、その歌唱も含め、彼の音楽的な全方位性が如実に発揮されたものである。カントリーを歌って、何が悪いの？

ところで、この２作品でも１曲ずつカヴァーされているジム・フォード、この人物の名に覚えがあるという人は、おそらくニック・ロウのファンだろう。良い趣味してる。

ボビーウーマックのソウルは熱い。本2-On-1 CDの一枚目のLookin' for a Love Again は暖かみ溢れるソウルフルなアルバムだ。Five Blind Boys From Mississipiらでお馴染みのミィディアム傑作のタイトル曲、I Don't Wana Be Hurt By Ya Love Again,Doing It My Way,You're Messing Up A Good Thingのバラード名曲に、Let It Hang Out,You're Welcome Stop On Byのアップテンポの好曲と目白押しだ。このＬＰで初めてボビーを知ったんだけど、誠実な普段着での歌いぶりやギタープレイ、日常の何気ない出来事を歌ったソングライティングに胸を打たれたことをしみじみと思い出す。当時アルバイトが終わった後に一服しながら本アルバムを毎日のように聴いていた。ギターを抱えた渡り鳥といった風情のジャケットも好きだ。
二枚目のB.W. Goes C.W.はタイトル通りボビーのカントリーソング集だ。上記アルバムでも一曲カントリーを渋く決めていたが、あのウーマックの作品なので、コアなカントリーソングを歌っていて、薄っぺらなところはまるでない。ブルースやサザンソウルとカントリーの繋がりを感じさせるディープな一枚に仕上がっている。
