５枚組のボックスセットが出た後に
残された音源を元にまとめられた最後の作品集。
この深い歌声を聴くと、
もう何も言えなくなる。ただただ耳を傾けるだけ。
聴きましょう。

　このアルバムは亡くなる数ヶ月前に声が録音され、その後に以前のアメリカン・レコーディングス・シリーズに参加していたハートブレイカーズのギタリストなどが音を加えたそうです。この手の本人が存命中には未完成だった曲に手を加えた作品は往々にして過剰なアレンジになったりしますが、シリーズを通してのプロデューサーのリック・ルービンはここでは適切なアコースティック・アレンジを施しています。キャッシュ自身の最後の作曲のLike the 309の他に、以前のアルバムでは意外な選曲が見られた他の人の曲もあまり違和感なくアルバムに溶け込んでいるようです。そしてキャッシュの枯れつつも心に響く歌声が、力みなくすぐ間近に聞こえてきます。

ジョニー・キャッシュはカントリー界の大御所中の大御所ですが、このアルバムは亡くなる数ヶ月前に録音されたせいかどうか、私には判りませんがブルースあるいはレクイエムのように聞こえます。もちろんちゃんと聴けばメロディーもリズムもカントリーですが、歌声とテンポの微妙な感じからモノクロームの薄暗い霧の朝のようなアルバムです。頻繁には聴かないと思いますが、とても落ち着いて、この先いつまでも聴くことの出来るアルバムです。沁みます。
