映画とはお国柄が出やすいものだ。この映画の舞台、ベルギーへの日本人の印象といえば、王室やチョコレート、ワッフルくらいしかないのではないか。

この映画の舞台は、そんなベルギーのスラム街。主人公のイゴールは、不法入国者の斡旋（もちろん違法）を仕事にしている父親と2人暮らし。仕事場で客の財布を盗む、お世辞にも「良い子」とは言えない15歳の少年だ。

しかし、その不法入国者の1人が事故に遭い、「妻子を頼む」とイゴールに遺言を残して死んでしまう。父親は違法が発覚するのを恐れて彼の死を隠すのだが、イゴールは葛藤し、自分のやり方で遺言を守ろうとするのだった。

かなり淡々とした話で、それほど盛り上がり所もなく、「えっ？」って所で終わりもするが、
観終わった後、なぜかじいんと心に残ってしまった。リバー・フェニックスにちょっと似た主人公のイゴールが、何だか哀しくて切なくてならない。父親に反抗したその後、彼がどうなったかや、なぜそんなにもあの遺言を守ろうとしたのか、とても考えてしまう。

「ああ、面白かった！」というわけでもないのに、主人公のことを真剣に思ってしまう、
そんな不思議な映画だった。

自分は自転車ロードレースが好きでよく海外のレースをＣＡＴＶで観戦するのですが、この映画の舞台となっているベルギーのレースは、舗装状況が大変悪く、天候不順な悪条件で行われることが多いので「北の地獄」とあだ名されるほど。

そんなベルギーのスラムで、密入国者に住む場所と仕事を与えて金をむしりとるハイエナ親子。その息子イゴールは、見習中の自動車修理工場で窃盗をくりかえしても何とも思わないすさんだ心を持つ少年だ。建設現場で墜落死したアフリカ系の密入国者から、死ぬ間際、残された妻と子供のことを託されるイゴール。そこから彼の心に微妙な変化がはじまっていく。

この映画に登場するベルギーの街はひたすら薄汚く寒そうで、とても海外旅行に行こうなどとは思えない殺伐とした風景がひたすら映し出されます。その＜北の地獄＞で、＜灼熱の大地＞アフリカから夫に会うためにやってきた母と子は、イゴールの心の中に人間らしい暖かさを呼びさまさせたのかもしれません。

「妻と子供を頼む・・」

父に支配されていたイゴール少年の
内側で何かが変化してからが興味深い。

彼が子供だったころは盲目的に父親を
受け入れたのに、成長した今は違う。

何かに気がついて、父親に距離をおき、
父の支配から抜けようと必死だった。

彼の心の揺れがリアルで飽きないし、
お揃いの指輪を売る場面が象徴的だ。

父はまだ息子を支配したいと思っている。
でも少年は成長して自我に目覚めた。

いつしか生きる価値観が変わっていた。
そんなところが面白かった。
