コルトレーンをギターで、と聞いてどんな音を想像するだろう。ギタリストから想像してください。
先頭を切るのはEric Johnson。
何でも弾ける人だけれどこんな本格的なフュージョンは初めて聴く。

解説は省きミュージシャン等を紹介。

プロデュースとアレンジはJeff Richman。
もちろんギターも弾いています。エンジニアにPaul Tavenner。

ベースはAlphonso Johnson、キーボードはLarry Golgings、ドラムはTom Brechtlein。
ギターはEric Johnson(1)、Jeff Richman(2、8)、Steve Lukather(3)、Greg Howe(4、7)、
Mike Stern(5、9)、Frank　Gambale(6、11)、Robben Ford(10)、Larry Coryell(12)。

どうです? すごいでしょ。

エリック・ジョンソン、スティーブ・ルカサー、ジェフ・リッチマン、マイク・スターン、グレッグ・ハウ、フランク・ギャンバレ、ロベン・フォード、ラリー・コリエルという当代のフュージョン界を代表するギタリストたちによる、ジョン・コルトレーンのトリビュートアルバムです。

この手の企画物アルバムは、「船頭多くして」とか「大山鳴動して鼠一匹」という感じで、面子の豪華さに目を奪われてしまい、肝心の音に関しては印象が曖昧になりがちです。このアルバムを聞くまでは、若干そんな危惧を感じていましたが、いきなりエリック・ジョンソンが登場してそんな心配は杞憂に終わります。しかし、G３ライブ以外ではあまり外に出たがらないエリック・ジョンソンの参加は嬉しい限りです。特に「Giant Step」をまったく新しい解釈で弾きこなすグレッグ・ハウには正直脱帽モノです。私のように昔、コルトレーンを聴き込んだ人間でも十分楽しめますし、コルトレーンにあまり馴染みがない人でも結構新鮮に感じられるのではないでしょうか。しかし名曲「Naima」担当がフランク・ギャンバレというのも面白いですね。組み合わせの妙を楽しめるようになれば、十分おつりがくるのではないでしょうか。

以前、ビートルズのトリビュートアルバムがやはりフュージョンギタリストたちによって作られましたが（John Abercrombie やAllan Holdsworth などが参加）、今回はより難度が高いコルトレーンということで、上質のフュージョンアルバムに仕上がっています。

ジャズ界の超大御所、ジョン・コルトレーン・トリビュート・アルバムです。ジョン・コルトレーンといえば、圧倒的なまでの『シーツ・オブ・サウンド』が彼の代名詞とされていますが、さすがにロック、ジャズ、フュージョン界のスーパー・ギタリスト、見事なまでに弾きこなしてますね。バカテクを存分に堪能できます。参加ギタリストはこういうオムニバスには滅多に出てこないエリック・ジョンソン（日本では信じられない程名前が売れてませんが、音楽性、独創性、個性、ギター・テクは秀でてます。是非ヴァイ、サトリアーニと競演しているG３ライヴを聴いて欲しいです。DVDも安価なリージョン・フリーで発売されてます。）スティーヴ・ルカサー、マイク・スターン、ロベン・フォード、
ラリー・コリエル、フランク・ギャンバレ、グレッグ・ハウ等です。
利き所満載のアルバムですが、特にグレッグ・ハウが見事に弾きこなしている超難曲｢ジャイアント・ステップス｣は必ずやリスナーを満足させてくれると思います。（この人も日本では知る人ぞ知るスーパー・ギタリストですね。もっと売れて当然だと思うんですが）。ギター好きなら
楽しめるアルバムに仕上がってますよ。
