高校生当時、クラシックファンだった私をロックの世界へ引きずり込んだ名盤が２枚ある。１枚はパープルの武道館ライブ盤。残りの１枚がELPの展覧会の絵だ。間違ってもELTではない！。キャメルなどのソフトロック（プログレ）の影響も受けたが、多くはこのELPによるものだ。内容は諸氏が解説の如くだが、当時の人たちも含め多くの方がチャイコフスキーの「くるみ割り人形」を出典としたアンコール曲の「ナットロッカー」を話題にされている様だが、個人的には息をも吐（つ）かせぬ、緊張感のある本編が好きだ。だがライブにおける楽器破壊は、パフォーマンスとは言え今でもクラシックファンである私としては、正直余り気持ちが良くない。globeのライブを見ると小室哲也がELPのパフォーマンスに影響を受けていることが分かるが、華奢な小室ではハモンドは動かない。ミュージシャンには腕力も必要だ。純粋な現代の音楽としての評価は、時代の流れもあって４.５といったところ。もちろん私の中では星５つだ！。同じジャケットデザインのアナログ盤は今でもクローゼットの奥に眠っている。

このアルバムも音楽史上の名盤中の名盤であろう１枚。
何がスゴイかってとても簡単には言い尽くせない程の完成された音。
このバンドもキング・クリムゾン、ピンク・フロイド等と
互角の争いを演じてきたプログレバンドだが、
このアルバムはその代表作である。
まずは、日本語タイトルが「展覧会の絵」。
これは、かの歴史的作曲家、ムソルグスキーの「展覧会の絵」
をアレンジした曲なのだが、この曲はおそらく皆さんも
小、中学校の音楽の時間で聞いた事があるだろう。
まぁ、お正月のCMによくかかりそうな曲なので、
一度聞けば分かるだろう。
さて、このアルバムは何がスゴイのか。
それは、この収録が、とあるコンサートホールで、
ほぼぶっ続けで演奏されていて、プログレ特有の独特の
間合いや張り詰めた緊張感がライブという相乗効果で否応無しに、
己の心にググっと引きずり込んでしまうのだ。
このバンドはキーボードとベースとドラマーの３ピースで、
個々の技術レベルの高さや大胆にクラシックの中に歌まで入れたり、
特にキーボードのその演奏力たるや、３０年経った今でも
このように出来る人が果たしているのだろうかと言うくらい、
素晴らしい奇才ぶりを発揮しまくっている。
とにかく、クラシックをこう言う風にアレンジできるというのは、
一言で「変人」と言うしかないだろう。いや、全く悪い意味はない。
このアルバムも聞けば聞くほど味が出る、
聞けば聞くほど良さが分かる、聞けば聞くほど深みにハマっていく…。
ちなみに、普通にさらっと聞いてはダメです。
間違い無くつまらないと思うでしょう。

　’７１年発表作。
　ロック･バンドによるクラシックの曲のカヴァーというのは、今も昔も目新しくもなく、その成功例というのも多くない。しかし、数少ない成功例の一つが本作である。
　もともとアルバムとして発表するつもりはなかったが、そのライヴ･パフォーマンスが評判を呼び、海賊盤対策として急遽発売となったというのは、本作に纏わる逸話。それも納得なのは勿論言うまでもない。
　特筆すべきは、オリジナルには当然無い、GREG　LAKEにより歌詞をつけられ、そのメロディが歌われる点だ。それがまた繊細で美しい。
　演奏面でもそれは顕著で、このバンドらしいパワフルな面もあるが、一方で珍しく静かに聴かせる面もあリ、起伏に富んだ展開を見せている。
　ライヴ演奏という事もあいまって、その緊張感がより雰囲気を引き立てている。
　曲の良さを理解し、十分に引き出して、柔軟な姿勢とアイデアで独自の表現によって具現化した、安易さの全く無い見事なカヴァー作品だ。
