　’７１年発表の２nd。
　前作はデビュー作ということもあり、傑作には間違いなかったものの、３人の個性、技量を見極めるようとする、どこか手探り的な、実験的要素も感じられた。
　そして本作では、早くもそれが消化吸収され、まとまりのある内容として表現された、見事な作品となっている。
　その代表が、このバンドの最高傑作とも評価されるタイトル曲「Tarkus」である。変拍子を多様した複雑怪奇な曲を、３人のキーボード、ベース、ドラムが攻撃的に絡みつきあいながら構築してゆく様は、圧巻の一言に尽きる。
　また、GREG　LAKEのヴォーカルも前作以上に伸び伸びと歌っている感がある。
　本作ではこの大作のみが注目されがちだが、その後の小品曲にも好作がある。
　プログレ･バンド数多しと言えど、３人編成にもかかわらず、パワフルという点では他の追随を許していない事を改めて思い知らされる傑作だ。

　個人的にＥＬＰの最も好きな作品はトータルで考えれば１枚目なのですが、個々の楽曲で言うとこの２枚目の題名にもなっている、「タルカス」が一番だと思います。「悪の教典」よりも私は好きです。
　なんと言っても印象的なのは、ムーグ・シンセサイザーによるあのリフです。まさに戦車が、怪獣が迫ってくるような迫力です。ただ、若干やはり展開に強引なところも見られ、それが評価の分かれ目になっているようですが、私は逆にころころ変わる展開に飽きがこず、聴きやすいと思っています。

　ピンク・フロイドや、初期のクリムゾン、イエスなどに比べると、深遠さに欠けるかもしれませんが、それだけにわかりやすく、誰にでも衝撃を与えうる作品、演奏になっていると私は思います。プログレと一般的に分類されているものの中では最も聴きやすく、凄い作品なのではないでしょうか。
