セロニアス・モンクの最高傑作はというとブリリアント・コーナーズやモンクス・ミュージックといったコンボやオーケストラによる作品が思い浮かぶかも知れない。確かにモンクの総合的な世界への評価という意味ではそれらは重要かつ完成度の高いアルバムだといえよう。しかし、モンクの本質はといえば、ソロではないだろうか。ピアノ・トリオという形式もモダン・ジャズのなかではバッド・パウエルやオスカー・ピーターソンからビル・エバンスにいたるまで幅広く展開し、完全に定着したわけだが、ソロとなるとアート・テイタムという例外はあるが、キース･ジャレットが出るまで、それほど多くのピアニストが好んで演奏していない。それだけソロは表現力と演奏者の世界観が問われるものなのだろう。モンクはそのような意味で稀有なピアニストであり、彼の場合、独自の音楽性を具現化するのに、ソロほど適した形式はないと思われる。パリの四月、ゴースト・オブ・ア・チャンスといったスタンダードや名曲ラウンド・ミッドナイトなどがモンクならではのタイム感覚とハーモニー、メロディラインで展開される。本作はまさにモンク芸術のエッセンスが凝縮されている傑作盤である。
