ウエスト・コーストを訪れたロリンズがR.ブラウン、S.マンの名手2人をバックに朗々と吹きまくる傑作中の傑作。

   ソニー・ロリンズを知るためのキーワードとして、“カリプソ”と“ピアノレス”は欠かせない。前者に関しては、母親がヴァージン諸島の出身だったので、幼いころから自然な形でカリプソを耳にしながら育ったという環境上の要因が大きく作用している。後者については、なぜそうなのかはよくわからないが、ピアノレスといえばロリンズを真っ先に思い浮かべるジャズ・ファンは少なくない。
   本作は1957年に録音したロリンズ初のピアノレス・トリオ作品。この年、ロリンズはマックス・ローチのバンドで西海岸に赴いたが、その際に現地調達のレイ・ブラウンとシェリー・マンを加えて録音したアルバムが本作。要するに、「アート・ペッパー・ミーツ・ザ・リズム・セクション」の逆バージョンである。ピアノを外すことによって、元々自由奔放なロリンズがさらに自由な空間を手に入れ、天衣無縫なプレイを繰り広げる。スタンダードのほか、<1><4>といった西部劇映画の曲を取り上げており、このあたりも本作のユニークなところ。（市川正二）

むかしむかし、もう３０年くらい昔の話。
中学１年と２年の間の春休みに、生まれて初めてジャズ・レコードを買った。

ソニー・ロリンズ『ウェイ・アウト・ウエスト』（Contemporary）

その理由……ジャケットがすげぇカッコ良かった。

ロリンズがいったいどういう人物で、他にどんなレコードがあって、そのうちどれが代表作だとかも知らず（って言うか、レコード屋でジャズの棚を覗いたのは初めてだった）、ピアノ・レスのトリオ編成がどうたらという理屈も知らず、そのレコードが何年に何処で録音されたとかにも興味はなく、アドリブなんてのも当然の如く分からないし、もちろん西も東も知らない。西部の荒野にカウボーイ・スタイルで突っ立っている男が、小脇に抱えているのはテナー・サックスだ。だからって、サックスのレコードが欲しかったわけでもない。超カッコ良いジャケット･デザインのレコードを発見した、だから買っちゃった。

ただそれだけ。

カッコ良いジャケットのレコードには、カッコ良い音楽が封入されていると、絶対の直感があった。
演奏が上手いとか凄いとか、まったく判らない。初めて買ったジャズだから、他と比較しようがない。
録音が素晴らしかった。楽器の生（ナマ）の音が、目の前でカタチになって在る、って感じ。
聴いていてとても気持ちが良い。

毎日繰り返し聴いても飽きない。だけど勿体ないから一日一回だけ聴く。
一日二回聴くともう一度聴きたくなる。三回聴くと凄く贅沢している気分になった。

ソニー・ロリンズの代表作と云えばサキソフォン・コロッサスと本ＣＤと思います、しかしサキソフォン・コロッサスが初心者の方でも聞いて楽しめる作品と違い、ピアノレス・トリオの為か初心者の方はちょっと聞きづらいかもしれませが、アドリブ芸術の頂点を極めた演奏として、ジャズ・ファンとしては是非持っていたい作品です。

本作は５７年の録音で、シェリー・マン、レイ・ブラウンと組んだアルバムである。
ピアノレス、ワンホーンといえば翌年の“Freedom Suite”があるが、それとは異なり、ロリンズが何とも朗々に明るく吹き上げている。シェリー・マンがコンガでとぼけた味を出している１曲目など、本作の雰囲気をよくあらわしているように思える。

いろいろな意見はあるだろうが、“Saxophone Colossus”“Village Vanguard”などを吹き込んだ５６年から５７年が、ロリンズのひとつの頂点であることは間違いないだろう。そんな間のリラックスした作品といった感じのアルバムである。
