近頃はR&Bのアルバムなら誰でも出せるような感じがする。しかし、ソウルアルバムをレコーディングするとなると、具体的には言えない特別な要素を必要とする。この英国デヴォン州出身の17歳が彼女にそれが備わっていると初めて立証したのは、めったにないソウル・グルーヴのコレクション『ザ・ソウル・セッションズ』（原題『The Soul Sessions』）によってだった。彼女は再び、オリジナル曲による初めてのアルバムとなるこの『Mind, Body & Soul』（邦題『マインド、ボディ&ソウル』）でそれをやってみせた。ストーンにできるのはバラードの名作を読み取って聴かせるくらいのことだと言う人には、ミッドテンポの「Jet Lag」のアティテュードを聴いてもらおう。ズン、ズンと刻まれるバックビートのリズムに乗って、ストーンはすべてを包みこむ愛にくたくたになる様子を歌っている。リードシングル「You Had Me」では道を誤った女を演じ、痛烈でファンキーなワウワウ・ギターが、そのついつりこまれて「自分を見失った」心情を表現している。『Mind, Body & Soul』では、多くの感動的なバラードもフィーチャー。それらは『ザ・ソウル・セッションズ』で特徴的だったもっとゆっくりしたテンポの曲を連想させる。クワイアをバックにした「Security」は悲劇の後で愛し支えてくれるという感動的なストーリーを歌っている。ストーンがホーランド＝ドジャー＝ホランドの伝説的ソングライターラモントとその息子ボーと共作した「Spoiled」はロマンチックでみずみずしい1曲で、ピアノがリードするアレンジをストーンのアルトがそっとなでていくような感じがする。『Mind, Body & Soul』でほかに聴きどころとなるのは、眠りを誘う「Snakes & Ladders」とルーツレゲエ調の「Less Is More」。『ザ・ソウル・セッションズ』はストーンの名を世に広めることになったが、このアルバムはソウル・ミュージックの中での彼女の位置を紛れもないものにした。（Rashaun Hall, Amazon.com）

ざくっと聞いた感想では、結構懐かしいタイプ
の歌い方だと思いました。
良いシャウトをもったシンガーですかね。
Securityと言う曲はそのものが古いタイプの曲
ですが、ソウル〜ゴスペルの雰囲気がゴージャ
スに再現されていますしね。結構すきですね。
ここまでくると、ポップスと言ったほうがいい
のでしょうがR&Bがベースになっているようです。

　デビューアルバムのザ・ソウル・セッションが話題になり、高い評価を得た彼女の待望のセカンドアルバム！デビュー作で、この曲は白人女性が歌っているの？と驚きを与え、偉大なアーティストのカバー曲で実力を証明した彼女。それだけでも、この作品に注目してしまう。

　今作は、ＪＯＳＳ自信もほとんどの作品の共作者で、彼女らしさが溢れている。未だに、まだ１７歳というのが信じられないが・・。そして、なんといってもこの作品にたずさわる超豪華なゲストたち。ラモント・ドジャー、アンジー・ストーン、ナイル・ロジャース、ザ・ルーツのクエストラブなどなど。彼らも、彼女の声やソウル（魂）に強く惹かれているのだ。

　１ｓｔシングルでは、６０、７０年代の懐かしさと新しさを上手くミックスさせた仕上がり！
　今作品も、同年代のリスナーを楽しませ、大人をも唸らせるだろう。輸入盤はＣＣＣＤではなし、価格も安くて良い（日本盤にはボーナス・トラックが１曲）。

弱冠17歳のシンガーによるソウルフルなアルバム。店頭には国内盤も輸入盤もCCCDしか置かれていないので、ネット／アマゾンで買うことにしました。
邦楽・洋楽（とくにアメリカ）ともに、音楽産業が、若い女性のファッションのお手本になるようなアイドル・シンガーを発掘して、“弱冠何歳の天才シンガー”という触れ込みで売り出す。こういうことが90年代後半以降慣例になっているように思います。なるほどそういうシンガーたちは何のとりえもないタレントではないのですが、曲調（90年代ロック）、声質、歌い方のどれも“いまどきの若者を中心としたポップ・ミュージック”に均質化してしまい、容姿以外の個性に欠け、あきらかに20代以降の活躍が苦しいように見えます。つまり、十で神童、十五で天才、二十歳すぎたらただの人ということばを思い出して痛々しくなります。
けれども、ジョスは、二十代前半以下のアイドル、十七歳のアイドル・シンガーではなく、おっちゃん、おばちゃんも説得しながら、ソウルフルな歌一本で二十歳以降も活躍できる。このアルバムを聴いて、このように感じました。アルバムの最初のほうはあまりソウルフルではないのですが、それは歌のうまさがリスナーの鼻につくのを避けたかったからでしょう。後半にいくほど、ファンキーにグルーヴィーに、そしてソウルフルに一曲一曲歌い上げ、かといってリスナーにシンガー自身の声量・うまさを自己陶酔的に押しつけることもない。ジョスの魅力に圧倒されます。バックの演奏もジョスのヴォーカルを絶妙に引き立てています。
