　デッドとディランは、ご存知のとおり'87に共演している。世紀の組み合わせと評されたこのスーパースター同士は、結局うまくはいかなかったようである。そして、その原因はどちらかというとディランの方にあった。
　このライヴでのいい加減な歌唱にデッドは愛想を尽かしたと思われたのだが、豈図らんや、その後もこの憎むべきディランのナンバーをたびたびカバーしていたのである。そして編集されたのがこの記念すべきアルバムだ。
　一見、デッドとディランの音楽性は全く異なるように見える。事実その通りなのであるが、にも拘らずデッドのくつろぎが、ディランのナンバーに違った光を当てているのである。特にそれは「廃虚の街」に顕著だ。
　意外なのは、「見張り塔からずっと」の名演だ。この緊張感あるナンバーは、ひょっとするとジミ・ヘンドリックス以来の、ニール・ヤング、U2と言った錚々たる顔触れのカバーを凌ぐ出来かもしれない。何といってもジェリー・ガルシアのギターが光彩を放っている。
　最後に、「ディラン・アンド・ザ・デッド」で採用されなかった、「マン・オヴ・ピース」が収録されているのも、さらにこのアルバムの価値を高めていると思われる。

　名盤。

本作は７３年から９０年にかけてのDeadによるDylanのカバーをライブを中心に集めた傑作である。酷評を受けた８７年のDylan and the DeadのJoint Tourのライブ盤を私はそれなりに気にいっているのだが、それにしてもDylanのバック・バンドとしてではなく、Deadが本当に演奏したい形でのDylanの曲を集めたアルバムは本作が初めてであり、Dylanの曲をカバーする極上のバンドとしてのDeadの真価を知ることができる。引き締まった演奏ばかりでなく、GarciaがVocalをとるShe belongs to meもリラックスした名演で、本当に素晴しい（06年５月現在bobdylan.comのサイトで丸々１曲聴ける。それを耳にすればノックアウトされること間違いなし）。が、本作での最高の熱演を１曲選べと問われたら、私はDesolation Rowと答えるだろう。ライブ演奏だけでなく、８７年のツァーのリハーサルとして、Dylan自身がvocalのMan of Peaceのスタジオ録音が収められているのも嬉しい。名曲を選りすぐった名演を集めた本作は、Dylan信者にとっても間違いなくMust itemである。音質も抜群。

なお、上の商品説明ではディスク１枚と記されているが、私が入手したエディションでは２曲入りのボーナス・ディスクが１枚ついている（ボーナスあり、なしの２種類が流通している可能性はある）。そのうちの１曲がQueen Jane Approximatelyでこれも聞き逃せない。
