永井豪と安田達矢が日本古代史をモチーフに描いたSFロボットアクションアニメ。瀕死の重傷からサイボーグとして生まれ変わった司馬宙。彼はビッグシューターから射出されるパーツと合体し、古代よりの侵略者である女王・ヒミカの野望に立ち向かう。

あやしい異次元科学を使い古代日本を支配した邪魔大王国の女王ヒミカが数千年の眠りから目覚め、再び日本征服のため攻撃を開始した。司馬宙はその野望を打ち砕くため鋼鉄ジーグとなって甦る。

放映当時マジンガーＺやゲッターロボなどが大ヒットし
同プロが一番勢いのあったころと思う、鋼鉄ジーグが遂にＤＶＤ化
する。
ストーリーは、古代学者の父が銅鐸を発見し敵対する組織に殺害
される所から始まる。
また主人公芝宙は父よりサイボーグへと改造され鋼鉄ジーグのヘッドに
変身しサポートメカ、ビッグシューターより射出されるジーグパーツと

合体しビルドアップする事により鋼鉄ジーグとなる。
強制的に与えられた鋼鉄ジーグの力のために、己を犠牲にしなければ
ならない事に当初思い悩む姿が若者らしく、同じヒーロー者などで
組織に属していて、正義を守るのにやる気まんまんの主人公よりも
今見ると好感が持てる。
主人公が自分を犠牲にし葛藤しながら、人々を守っていく演出の

しかたもこの作品が元祖である。
古代のロマンである古墳や銅鐸など、バッググラウンドにあるストーリーも奥深い。
