5.0 out of 5 stars ジャンルを超えた、80年代を代表する作品, 2004/12/8
ハードロックがヒットチャートに入りづらかった時代にも関わらず、ビルボードでチャートを上り詰め、世界的にヒットしたスウェーデン出身のヨーロッパの３作目。

前２作で既に日本では高い人気が有ったものの、それまでの垢抜けない雰囲気を払拭し、世界市場を目指して作られた作品です。

どれをシングル・カットしてもおかしくない程の高い出来になっており、そういう意味では、BonJoviの「Slippery When Wet」に匹敵するでしょう。

一曲目の「The Final Countdown」のイントロは、殆どの方がどこかで耳にしているでしょう。非常に印象に残るメロディーです。

ハードロックに全く興味の無い方でも楽しめる、ジャンルを超越した名作だと思います。

この後に出した「Out of this world」「Prisoners in paradise」は、本作のようなヒットはしなかったものの、同様に質の高い作品です。

EUROPEはこの1枚で全てを語られる事が多い、それほどインパクトのあるアルバム。1は誰もが一度は耳にした事がある名曲である。1~3の流れ（1、2で盛り上げて3曲目にバラードを持ってくる）はこの時代のHRアルバムの王道である。
全2作はギターオリエンテッドな「ヘヴィー・メタル」だったのに対し、本作からキーボーディストが加入し、キーボードサウンドが前面に押し出された「ハード・ロック」に変化している。Voもそれまでの荒削りな感じから、トレーニングを受けたのか、格段に歌唱力が向上している。
当時、BON JOVIと肩を並べるくらいの人気があり、ジョンもEUROPEの人気には一目置いていたらしい。その後、BON JOVIは着実にヒットを出し続けるが、EUROPEは素晴らしい作品を作るも市場に評価されず、姿を消してしまう。
そんなEUROPEも最近復活し、アルバムを出した。今後の動向に注目である。

これ聴くと高校時代の夏を走馬灯の様に想い出します。毎日聴いてましたからね。超大物バンドに成長した時の作品ですよ。全曲HR/HM好きと言うよりも、LA METALキッズ、AORやらポップス好き等に幅広く受け入れられるものと言えるでしょう。バンドにとっては、これで全米制覇するべし、と気合たっぷりにリリースしただけに正に願ったり叶ったりだったのでしょうね。この作品じゃ売れないはずないですよ。全曲全米のFMラジオでプレイされてもおかしくない、ある意味、非常に軽く、聴き易く、憶え易い曲ばかりですからね。私はRock the Night、Danger on the Track、Ninja、Cherokeeが特に好きですね。

しかし、内容はさて置きこのカバーデザイン酷過ぎませんかね。そう思うの私だけですか？
