前作”Peace at last”から８年！？デビューから２３年でリリースされたアルバムはたったの３枚。そして１枚目の”Walk across the rooftop”から現在までのその３枚はどれも経年劣化することなく、いや音楽がオカシくなっていくばかりだからこそむしろ経年純化されている。個人的にはその全てのアルバムが幾度となく僕のすさんだ気持ちを救い上げてくれた。

８年ぶりのこの４枚目の”High”も確実に純化を辿るアルバムだ。澄み切ったストリングスシンセの響きにゆったりと流れ行くポール・ブキャナンのヴォーカル、”Yaeh、Yeah”というフェイク、一度聴けばすぐにブルーナイルと分かるメロディは20年経ってもほとんど変わりがない。シンセの音でこれほどアコースティックな響きを聴かせてくれる者はいないだろうが、思えば彼らこそフォークトロニカの原型と言える。このアルバムでは、逆影響なのかエレクトロニカの如きクリック音がかすかに右耳へ左耳へと抜けていくことくらいしか変化を聴きとることはない。変わらない美しさである。エンジニアリングは積年の盟友マルカム・マルコルムだ。

しかしこの透明度の高いサウンドにあって、歌詞だけがやや生々しくなっている。１ｓｔの名曲”Tinseltown in the rain”でも錆れいく工場町の侘しさを歌ってはいたが、もっと個人的な生々しさを呈するようになった。それでも１曲目で「ありきたりな奇跡が必要だ」（ありきたりな奇跡、なんと美しい言葉だろうか！）と祈りを捧げ、６曲目では「僕らはどこまでも高みに昇れることだろう」と空を見上げる。希望を忘れてはいない。これはまるで、いや、まさに寡作家が送り出した待望の名短編集なのである。

と、ここで終らずに追記したいのはブルーナイル作品の海外盤は歌詞がついていない。８年ぶりで日本ではほとんど誰も期待していなかったであろうこの傑作を国内盤でリリースしたBMGに感謝しつつ、歌詞カード、対訳を読みながら何度も聴いてください。それとブルーナイルの長年のファンには号泣するしかない、激しくレアなデビューシングル（２３年前の音源！）がこの国内盤にだけ収録されている。もう世界中のオークションサイトにウォント・リストを出さなくてもいい。ありきたりな企画だとしても、これは「奇跡」である。
