昔のJAZZの写真とか映像なんかそんなに残っていないんでしょうが、よくぞこれだけ集めて、10枚のDVDにまとめたもんだと感服します。そういった意味では、これはケン・バーンズさんの偉業であります。
しかし、私を含めてJAZZという音楽そのものを楽しみたい人には辛いものがあります。例によって解説やらインタビューが映像のそこかしこに散りばめられて演奏が分断され、まともに音楽そのものを楽しむことが難しいのです。JAZZの歴史やミュージシャンの人となりに興味のある方にはお勧めしますが、演奏をタップリ楽しみたいかたには不向きのDVDといっていいでしょう。
とはいえ、JAZZのドキュメンタリーとして割り切れば、これはこれでナカナカ見応えがあるようにも思えます。（何たって全巻で１８時間近くありますから）

実に丁寧に作られたDVDであり、これまで聞き流していた音楽がただのBGMでなくなり、好きで聞いていた曲がより親しみをもって聞けるようになる魔法の玉手箱といった作品です。古き日のニューオーリンズの写真などは、実際には観てない筈なのになぜか懐かしい。いい写真をギャラリーで見ているような楽しみすらある。モノクロームの映像はシネクラシックをみているようでもあります。ジャズは聞くばかりでなく、観る楽しみもあることに思い当たらせてくれます。ジャズの歴史のセミナーというより、ジャズを綴った映像詩といった趣を感じます。そして、好きなジャズミュージシャンの知られざる部分も観るというより、共に体験する喜びもあって、とにかく盛り沢山。
この感動的なＤＶＤを見てＪＡＺＺの名曲、名演を聴いたら楽しみは１００倍になると思います。
