 『ジュラシック・パーク』などの原作者としても知られるマイケル・クライトンが原作・脚本・監督を担当したサスペンス・アクション。ヴィクトリア王朝時代の風俗を再現した映像が心地よいムードを醸し出し、また多分にユーモアを交えた語り口がいい。ジェリー・ゴールドスミスのダイナミズムとノスタルジーをあわせもつ音楽の妙も素晴らしいものがある。列車の屋根などの攻防など、アクションとしての見せ場もたっぷり。（的田也寸志）

ロンドンを出発する金塊輸送列車から、謎の怪盗が見事に金塊を盗み出す強盗事件を描く、１９７９年製作・「マイケル・クライトン監督」の傑作サスペンス作品。
【‘金塊は４個の鍵を必要とする鋼鉄製の金庫で保管され、輸送列車からの金塊強奪は不可能とされていた。’・・・・その話を聞いた謎の男ピアース（主演：ショーン・コネリー）が、４個の鍵を手に入れるため作戦を練るが・・・・・・。】
綿密な計画で特技を持つ仲間を集め、ハラハラ・ドキドキの見事な連係プレーで困難な４個の鍵を手に入れる展開・疾走する列車から見事に金塊を手に入れる展開・あっけなく逮捕されるが見事に脱走する展開など、登場人物たちの展開するドラマとストーリーがすっきりとまとまり、スリルとサスペンスたっぷりの娯楽編で最後まで飽きさせないと痛感するが・・・・・・。

マイケル・クライトン原作・監督の強盗映画です。スピーディさには最近の映画に負けますが鑑賞後の爽快感は最近の映画では味わえないものがあるでしょう。また、主役の（泥棒！）ショーンコネリーとその相棒にドナルドサザーランド、配役はばっちりです。音楽は今は亡きジェリーゴールドスミス、場面を盛り立てます。（特にオープニングは素晴らしい！）ルパン三世が好きならきっと気に入ると思いますよ。ショーンコネリーは「エントラップメント」でも泥棒役をやってましたが、断然「大列車強盗」に軍配は上がるでしょう。
