1994年チャイコフスキー・コンクールで1位なしの2位となったニコライ・ルガンスキーの1995年の録音である。
チャイコフスキーのソナタ第1番、スクリャービンのソナタ第2番、プロコフィエフのソナタ第6番が収録されており、いわばロシアピアニズムの王道を踏み出した録音といったところ。

チャイコフスキーのソナタは「グランドソナタ」の異名を持つ大曲であるが、これを聴かせるように弾くのはなかなか難しい。
勇壮なテーマを音楽的に響かせて、ソナタとしての均衡を保つ必要があるからだが、ルガンスキーは「あれ？」と思うほどあっさりとこれをクリアする。そして、薄い上品な味付けで、適度な距離感を置きながら清廉な音楽へと昇華させてしまう。チャイコフスキーのピアノソナタってこんないい曲だったの？と思わずみなおしてしまう。そしてテクニックも縦横無比で、鍵盤の上を鮮やかに駆け巡るかれの強靭な腱は訓練のたまものに違いない。

スクリャービンでは彼のスタイルではこの第2番のような古典的な作風のものが向いているかもしれない。後期のマジカルな作品とは違い、この時点でのルガンスキーの「らしさ」をアピールするのにいい選曲だ。この辺も得意な曲を選んだのに違いない。

プロコフィエフの第6番についても「大得意曲」のようで、すでにこの後もう1度録音している。しかし、この最初の録音でも完成度は高く、技術的な面は申し分ない。冒頭から重々しい重音の美しい交錯に圧倒されるし、そのクリアにスーッと消える後味のよさも見事だ。2楽章のバレエ音楽のようなリズム感も卓越。ややシンプル過ぎるかもしれないが、まあ十分である。3楽章のメランコリーも適度に歌っており、美しい。終楽章のような凶暴さを持った音楽はやはりすばらしいノリで、弾き始めたら止まらないといったところか。音階の粒の揃った強い響きは圧巻。
