   マデリン・ペルーのデビュー作『Dreamland』が1996年にリリースされると、その成功で彼女は注目アーティストとなった。それから8年が過ぎて30歳になり、この2作目をリリース。このアルバムの12曲は彼女の自信と復活を告げるものだ。エリオット・スミスとWC・ハンディの中間のような歌で、アルバム・タイトル曲はベッシー・スミスによる有名で曲だ。アメリカ生まれではあるが、ペルーはフランス語教師の母親をもち、フランス語と文化にどっぷり浸って大きくなった。デビュー・アルバムではエディット・ピアフをカバーしたが、今回はジョセフィン・ベーカーが第2次世界大戦中に、連合軍のために歌った「J'ai Deux Amours」をカバーしている。（David Greenberger, Amazon.com）

　「これこそジャズ・ヴォーカル！」と新録では久しぶりに嬉しくなったアルバム。1996年のファースト「Dreamland」に続く2004年セカンド。一度聞いたら忘れられない素晴らしいスモーキー・ヴォイスにより、ポピュラー・カントリー・ブルースといった要素もジャズの伝統と歴史の中に集約され、オルガンやギターの落ち着いた音とリズムを背に、時に Billie Holiday が現代に甦ったような瞬間さえ現れる、個人的には2004年ヴォーカル・ベスト。たゆたいながら暖かさが拡散していくような声で懐かしさまでも呼び覚ます歌唱は、まさしく今のヴォーカル。静かな夜に聴くと最高。

マデリン・ペルーは、ジャズ指向のノラ・ジョーンズの先駆けとなったと言われる女性ミュージシャン（1973年生まれ）。本作は、レナード・コーエン、ビリー・ホリデイ、ボブ・ディラン、エリオット・スミス、ハンク・ウィリアムズなどの古今アメリカの名曲をジャズに融合したカヴァー集。とくに、トラック２は、ノラ・ジョーンズ「ドント・ノー・ホワイ」のライターとしても知られるジェシー・ハリスがインディーズ時代にアルバムで発表していた曲ですが、マデリン・ペルーとジェシー・ハリスらとの共作曲です。
ジャズをあまり聴かないぼくが聴くと、「エラ・フィッツジェラルドが歌うコール・ポーター」、つまり五十年代のジャズの音を思わせる、レトロスペクティヴ（懐古趣味の）／ノスタルジック（郷愁のある）で、しかも精巧な音作りです。
ただ、ヴォーカルと曲調は、エラ・フィッツジェラルドというより、もっと渋めのビリー・ホリデイに近いです。歌声、ピアノ、オルガン、アコースティック・ギターなど、たえず温厚でいても、感情や懐古趣味を圧しつけずにクールです。まったく暗いというわけでもないのですが、テンポはすべて、深夜、キャバレーを思わせるミディアム、もしくはスロー。でも、トラック11、12でまるで朝焼けを迎えたかのように明るい雰囲気になります。
12曲で約43分と、演奏時間は短めで、テンポよく曲が替わります。最近のCDは一曲の演奏時間が長いことにご不満があるかたには最適なアルバムでしょう。
やはり、シングル・カットもされた自作で共作のトラック２がすばらしいです。

あるときＦＭから流れていたトラック９のウェアリー・ブルースに心ひかれ、何の予備知識も無いままにマデリン・プルーの名前のメモだけで買い求めた一枚。正直、黒人の古いシンガーかな、というイメージだったのでまだ若い白人の女性だったことにまず驚いた。ビリー・ホリディがビロードの声だったように、マデリンもまたしっとりとした柔らかな歌声で聞く者を撫でてくれる。ベシー・スミス、ビリー・ホリディ、ハンク･ウィリアムス、それにジョセフィン・ベイカーなどのカヴァーをノスタルジックな空気とともに丁寧に聞かせてくれるかなり良質の一枚。経歴やスタッフなどについてはライナーノーツに譲るとして、一言で言えば「気持ちのいい」できあがりで、気がつくと聞き終わっている不思議な一枚でもある。
