全26話に及ぶ物語の最初の２話を収録。『七人の侍』をベースに、ＳＦ的視点を盛り込んだ新しい物語を創造しています。原作品に強いこだわりを持つ人には辛いかも。
すでにご指摘の方に賛成ですが、これは大人の物語なのです。話の中心の一つに、カツシロウという若いサムライの成長物語があるものの、おおかたは零落れてゆくサムライ、それも中年にさしかかろうかという年代の者たちの最後の輝きを描いています。しかし、零落れてゆく者たちのなんと格好良いことか。安易な発想と知りつつも、カンベエを中心にした新たな物語を見てみたい、そんな気持ちがします。
美しい映像を見せてくれるのは、制作を担当したゴンゾ。しかも音声はドルビー・デジタル5,1chです。ゴンゾは『巌窟王』でも素晴らしい映像を見せてくれました。この第１巻を買っちゃうと残りすべて買うハメになるから気をつけてね（笑）。

キャラクターがしっかりと描かれていて、ストーリーもとても面白いです。プロの声優でない方が多いですが全体的に声優の演技が上手く、絵も酷いくずれ方はしないしCGも綺麗に入っているので、アニメとして非常に見易いです。放送がＮ●Ｋということで規制もいろいろあったらしいですが(血をあまり出しちゃいけないとか)設定を大きく変えることで、原作とは全く別のものであるという見方がよりしやすくなるという効果も出て逆に良かったと思います。私はもともと時代劇がすきなので勿論『七人の侍』も見てますが、あの大きすぎる原作をここまで変えられたのは本当にすごいと思います。原作とはまた違った良さが楽しめました。只、一つ注意して頂きたいのはこの手のものは原作とは全然違う別の作品なんだということをちゃんと理解して見るということです(戦国●双とかに出てくる信長を本当の(=実在した)信長そのものだと思わないのと同じように)。｢原作〜より｣っていうのは付けなくちゃ駄目だから付いているだけなのでそれを踏まえた上で見ると本当に面白いアニメです。

かの黒澤明監督の名作「七人の侍」を元にしたアニメ。

実は「七人の侍」を観たことがないのだが、
それにしても「七人の侍」で「SAMURAI7」とは
どんなふざけた色ものアニメなんだ、と期待せずに観たが、
これがどうして、ものすごくデキがいい。
普通に、いや普通以上に面白い。

なにせ７人の侍はどれもキャラが立っているし、
ごく自然に混在した２Ｄと３Ｄの映像も迫力。
侍だけに剣や刀での戦いが多いが、そのどれもがカッコいい。
とにかく丁寧に作られていることを感じるアニメ。

「七人の侍」の単純な焼き直しではなく
ベースを大事にしつつも世界観やキャラクタを
しっかりリメイクした、ひとつの新作になっている。
