いつものクローネンバーグらしく、難解で暗い。映画終わった後パンフを見てやっとストーリーの仕掛けが理解できた。しかし、こういう監督も映画界には必要なんだろう。主演の俳優は、レッドドラゴンといい、少し病んだ役をこのごろ演じている。固まらないでいて欲しい。

この監督は観る側の気持ちにはお構いなし。誰にも感情移入ができないまま終わる。レイフ・ファインズのピリピリするような神経質な演技が迫ってくるが、彼には感情移入ができない。できない理由がちゃんとあるのだ。薄暗いイギリスの陰鬱な天気も、彼の演技にぴったり重なっているが、観ている側は単なる傍観者で、置いてきぼりをくった気持ちになる作品。これは監督の狙いどうりなのだろう。

ﾃﾞｨﾋﾞｯﾄﾞ･ｸﾛｰﾈﾝﾊﾞｰｸﾞはこれまでも繰り返し精神病もしくは精神病的なﾍﾟﾙｿﾅとそれをとりまくﾊﾟﾗﾀﾞｲﾑを取り上げてきたが、この「ｽﾊﾟｲﾀﾞｰ」もまたそのﾍﾞｸﾄﾙ上に位置する。
彼の特徴である神経質かつ優等生的に切り取られた構図はあくまでこの世界の閉塞感を煽るものであり、唯一の外界との連絡するｵｰﾌﾟﾆﾝｸﾞでの鉄道駅のｼｰﾝもあくまで一方通行的にﾗﾙﾌ･ﾌｨｰﾈｽの手などﾐｸﾛ的なｸﾛｰｽﾞｱｯﾌﾟへと収斂されるにすぎない。鉄道については、途中で一度背景を、この世界をただ無視するように通過していくｼｰﾝが挿入されるのが象徴的。
このほかｸﾛｰﾈﾝﾊﾞｰｸﾞの特徴である厭世観や性に対する複雑な罪悪感とそれに根ざす反動的ｴｸｽﾀｼｰ、諸々のﾌｫﾋﾞｱ（恐怖症）、ﾊﾟﾗﾉｲｱなどが、一通りこのﾌｨﾙﾑにも表現されるのだが、古びたﾛﾝﾄﾞﾝの町並み、ﾍﾟﾝと紙のﾉｰﾄなど、今になってﾃﾞｨﾃｰﾙがなぜかｱﾅｸﾛﾆｽﾞﾑに満ち、かつて「ﾋﾞﾃﾞｵﾄﾞﾛｰﾑ」などで見せた近未来的ﾃﾞｨﾃｰﾙからのｼﾌﾄを見せるのは何故なのか。
いづれにしても出口のないｻｲｺﾛｼﾞｶﾙなこのﾌｨﾙﾑには、肯定的な視点がまったくどこにもない。
