繊細で不器用なピアニストとその家に住み込みで働くシャンドライの純愛映画。
静かで美しい映像と鼓動のような音楽が乙女の揺れ動く恋心をよーくあらわしてます。
ラストも切ない余韻があって美しい。サンディ・ニュートンの弾むような愛らしくいじらしい
シャンドライとディビッド・シューリスの包み込むような静かな演技が素晴らすぃ。

お金をかけなくても良いものをつくれますよ、という見本のような映画。テーマはズバリ「無償の愛」！家財道具どころか、最後には分身のようなピアノまで売り飛ばしてシャンドライに尽くすキンスキーの姿は、オスカー・ワイルドの「幸福な王子」を思い出させる。音楽も秀逸。シャンドライの音楽はサリフ・ケイタやジョン・コルトレーンなどの、アフリカをルーツとするビートミュージック。一方キンスキーの方はモーツァルトやスクリャービンなどのクラシック音楽。セリフの少ない映画であるが、これらの音楽を二人のセリフの代わりに巧みに使うことにより、ベルトリッチ演出は冴えわたる。

ローマで叔母の遺産を頼りにひっそりと暮らす孤高のピアニスト、キンスキーは、家政婦、シャンドライに恋をする。シャンドライは、政治犯で投獄されている夫を偲びながら、医学の勉強をしている女性だ。この二人の心模様を90分程度の長さに比較的すっきりとした筋立てでまとめた良作である。
　キンスキーはシャンドライの願いをかなえるために大切なピアノを手放すことになるのだが、その前にシャンドライのために作曲し、演奏会を開く。この曲は、シャンドライの好むアフリカンミュージックとキンスキーのそれまでの生き方を象徴するクラッシックを融合させたような旋律である。シャンドライの文化背景やそれまでの人生を受け入れた形で自身のこれからの生き方や心情を形成していこうというキンスキーの決意が伺え、感動する。ただ、ラストシーンのまとめかたは、私にとってはやや不満が残る。キンスキーにはあくまで純粋な恋を貫いて欲しかった。
