ＬＰでは、ジャケットが全身写っており、タイトル名も”Aberdeen Mississippi Blues 1937-40 "でした。ブッカ・ホワイトは、戦前ブルース界では、チャーリ・パットン、サン・ハウス、ロバート・ジョンソン等と並ぶデルタ・ブルースの巨人である。戦前に吹き込んだ３０曲中の３７年の２曲と４０年の１２曲のから選んであるアルバムであり事実上のベスト盤でしょう。彼のギター演奏は親指でコードぽいリズムを弾いて人差し指と中指とメロディを弾き小指にチューブをはめたボトルネックを行う独特のギター奏法である。このアルバムの２曲目の「Shake'Em On Down」と７曲目の”Parchman Farm Blues "はブルースの名曲として多くのミュージシャン達にカバーされています。ぜひ、現在のあわただしさを感じ取った人にギターの弾き語りだけのシンプルナ彼のブルースを聞いてもらいたいです。

私が戦前ブルースで最初にハマッタのが、この人ブッカ・ホワイトで、それから25年、未だに彼は私にとってNO.1ブルースマンで有り続けています。一つ強調したいのは、ブッカの歌詞です。ブルースの歌詞は、はっきり言って決まりきっている物が殆どですが、ブッカのこの1937年、1940年のセッションでの作品には、彼の生き様が繊細に描写されています。その感情はストレートに伝わり、目頭が熱くなる事もしばしばです。歌詞と言うより、詩と言った方が適切かもしれません。生き様はブルースマンらしく波乱万丈であった様ですが、作品では、彼の心を正直に、そして誠実に歌っています。ボトルネック、ヴォーカルの素晴らしさは、いまさら言う事ありません。是非、対訳を読みながら、じっくり聴いて頂きたい1枚です。

強迫的な詞と叩きつけるようなベースラインを持つ典型的なデルタスタイルのFixin' to die bluesなどの曲が有名だし、ジャケットのいかつい顔のどアップからはまず野性的でプリミティヴな印象を受ける。

もちろん、その通り素晴らしくエモーショナルなブルースマンなのだが、一方では、タンパ・レッドやピーティ・ホイットストローからロバート・ジョンソンにまで至る当時人気のスタイルを敏感に取り入れたメロディーや流麗な歌い回し、B.B.キングにスライド奏法をあきらめさせたと言う巧みなギターなど、実は以外にテクニシャンの顔も併せ持つミュージシャンであったことが分かる。

いずれにしてもブルースファンならぜひともライブラリに加えたい重要人物の名盤であることは間違いない。国内盤は歌詞・曲目解説の訳も完備しているので安心だ。
