こういった存在を語る際、例えば「*****に影響を与えた」とか「○○○の元祖」などといった形容で、そのデータ面や歴史的意義や後世への影響力を述べるのも、それはそれで必要なことだが、それよりも、実際に自分の耳で聴いてみて、どういう風に感じたかを何とかして表現しなくては。もちろん、一回聴いただけではその良さがさっぱり分からない存在なんて当たり前だから、何度でも繰り返して聴いてみる。そうすると見えてくることがある。

リロイ・カーの1932年から1934年にかけての吹き込み16曲。ギターを弾く相棒は無論スクラッパー・ブラックウェル（一部でジョッシュ・ホワイトが加わる）。迫力で押し切る、というタイプとは全く違う。おしゃれで洗練された感じともまた少し違う。歌い口は決して濃くはないが、薄っぺらいものでも当然ない。だらしないという形容も違う気がする。どうしようもなさ、やるせなさ、と言ったらいいのか、そういったものが彼の歌とピアノの音から少しずつこぼれ落ちてくる。歌詞が分からないまま聴いても、何だかどことなく沈鬱で、ほんの少し、哀しい。歌詞を読むと、またこれがぶっそうで、痛々しく、また悲しくて･･･　スクラッパー･ブラックウェルのギターもリロイ・カーの歌唱の邪魔に決してならず、クイクイと抉り込んでくる歌伴の達人技。単純に聴いただけでは「あれ、こんなもんか？」と正直感じるが、何十回と繰り返し聴いて、何となくその凄さが見えてくる。そういう存在もいるのである。その真価にうち震えるには、自分はまだまだ時間がかかるけど、こういうことなら喜んで時間をかけよう。

アナログ時代から親しまれた方も多いはずのこのアルバムは、シティ・ブルースの礎を築いたとされるリロイ・カーの１９３０年代の録音を集めたものです。後世に与えた影響云々や、ＳＰ落としの音質はこの際目をつぶるとして、このピアノとヴォーカルは一日の疲れを癒すのに最適です。
